From a Pilates girl thank you! You are doing the Lord's work!

I’m the PP who took my DH out of class. I would like your advice as a Pilates girl. My DH has a genetic condition that affects his connective tissues. By 55 he’ll most likely be unable to walk. He cannot lift weights or do anything beyond body weight. He’d been doing yoga and Pilates in a gym class setting as his work out. Should he instead just do online classes at home? He’s obviously not macho due to his disability but a woman’s comfort/ peace of mind is more important to me.

Wow. I'm another who doesn't like men in yoga with me, but like them in bootcamp. Just different energy, and frequently the men coming in straight out of bed and don't smell great.

That said, you should care MORE about helping with your DH's disability than solidarity to a bunch of women you probably don't even know. If your DH can gain benefit from a yoga class, he should be there.

A man's ability to walk isn't more important than a yoga class.

Are you saying that a man's disability that could be helped by yoga is less important than the yoga class, a yoga class that allows men? You are hard.

No one should be in yoga class unless they are of Indian heritage. It's cultural misappropriation otherwise:

Here's an article about it from The Cut: https://www.thecut.com/article/women-men-solidcore-pilates.html

It's mostly young women giving voice to this. What do the older members of DCUM say?

Do not get too confused about the current legislative process in the US! It’s Truth Social and “X” that are used to make policy. Not Toktok, you silly goose.

Why don’t women just create classes called Women’s Pilates? Then it would be clear. You might get trans people though. Not sure if the DCUM intelligentsia would approve of that or not.

Because men would sue and invade those spaces too, just like they do with regular Pilates/hot yoga.

Ok, I didn’t know men did that. I had only ever heard of women suing their way into male-only institutions and such.

Oh yes, men cant stand it when women have their own spaces. They have to barge into everything

Seems like it goes both ways.

Not really. Women try to go out of their way to avoid men's spaces. Most women would never want to be trapped in a room full of men, wehereas that's a fantasy for most men

This is how Burning Tree Golf club in Bethesda is still all-male. Oh yes, they allow the wives to come twice per year: once for Mother's Day brunch and once before Christmas to buy gifts for their husbands at the pro shop.

Just make the Pilates studios private clubs.

It takes more than just declaring yourself a private club to get out of being a public accommodation, and it would probably kill any fitness business to try to adhere to the rules.

Ugh, I really hate that the women in this article are shaming the men for….BREATHING? I take reformer classes, and sometimes, especially in the level 1 classes, I am the only one audibly exhaling, even though that is literally the Pilates breath and you cannot properly engage your transverse abdominis without it. To me the people posting their fits while saying “women keep it classy” by only breathing silently are the fakers and I don’t like the vibe they bring to class.

Long tangent aside, at my studio it’s usually all-women, with the occasional middle-aged or senior guy. There’s also been the occasional professional male athlete for one of the Washington sports teams, some of them live in our area. Nobody leers and it’s always been fine.

I will say that one time at the solidcore near me, there was a super, super geriatric man who absolutely could not keep up with anything (I guess he thought it would be easy because it was “for women”?), and he had bare feet and didn’t wipe down his sweaty machine AT ALL before leaving. It was gross and annoying.

I hate men in the class b/c their long ass legs are infringing on my space when we're stretching, they are awkward to look at and always need help!

I feel like it's not all men doing the grunting and weird noises. I think some guys are probably quiet and just mind their business. I don't think they don't belong bc then it's not fair that they cant do something they like. idk, I personally wont mind it

I also feel like a lot of these men who go to yoga or pilates have this... self congratulatory air? Like they really expect you to notice that theyre doing the movements along with the women and be soooooo impressed. Maybe it's the competitiveness that so many men have, where they have to turn it into some kind of contest. But it always feels like theyre preening and trying to get attention whereas the women are mostly trying to blend in

Based on this thread, it would be more of a hellscape.
