USAID to be eliminated??

Is folded into State, some will be ok, some will become unemployed.

Will they get severance? I am the spouse of a USAID contractor waiting for bad news today or tomorrow.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/usaid-labor-director-pushed-fighting-back-removal-career-leadership-rcna190132

An order sidelining almost 60 senior career leaders at the U.S. Agency for International Development was temporarily rescinded Thursday by one of the few remaining senior career civil servants with the authority to do so, two current and two former USAID employees told NBC News.

Hours later, the same career employee was also placed on administrative leave.

“The materials show no evidence that you engaged in misconduct,” Nick Gottlieb, USAID's director of employee and labor relations, said in an email to the dozens of senior USAID employees placed on paid leave Monday. “As a result, I no longer have authority to maintain you in this status.”

Gottlieb acknowledged that he did not know how long his decision would hold.

“You may receive another email within the day reinstating your leave status. However, that notice will not come from me,” he wrote, adding, “I wish you all the best — you do not deserve this.”

No they do not deserve this. Nor do the people who were unjustifiably fired at DOJ and the FBI.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

—Martin Niemöller

This. All federal employees (and citizens!) who care about the rule of law should be resisting the attack on USAID.

Is there anything else we can do besides write to our representatives and vote?

Give to non-profits that do similar work. There's a lot of good ones out there.

Many relied on Fed grants and were shuttered this week.

How can you rely on AID????

the same way many private companies rely on government contracts (see: DOD, energy, etc)

I think foreign aid is important but it's worthwhile disbanding and rebuilding a donor agency from scratch. Not sure if the existing model can survive.

Not you again. Don't you have a dog to kick or kid to yell at?

I’m not the PP but our acquaintance lost their job as a contractor from the EO.

They bragged for years about their travel all over the world to “educate” the locals on support distribution. But they openly joked by the time they “trained” someone in country and aid arrived (if ever) whomever they “trained” was long gone - so they got to go back 2-3 times to train (or not) to the same country and typically they planned stops on their way of places to visit.

I am not saying there was not some good being done; but maybe 1 out 20 dollars spent was of value from what I heard.

Then Congress should shut it down. This is about more than just the agency, it's about the U.S. straying from being a country of laws and separation of powers and moving to banana republic status.

We have a constitution, laws, and checks and balances. DT is operating as if none of those matter. Get rid of waste, but within the bounds of the law of our country.

All of this. Reasonable minds have always disagreed about the role of government, but NEVER until now has there been any question about following the rule of law.

Any agency was opened by EO and can be dissolved by EO. My former ngo was funded by unsaid….it paid for lots of junkets for senior people.

This sounds like some "everyone in DC is in the swamp" type conspiracy fantasy. Most USAID employees are not stopping to book a suite in Paris on their way to their duties in the Sudan- BFFR. Most of them dont even earn that much money and are doing the same boring administrative stuff as everyone else at every other job. Stop coming up with these ridiculous storylines

lol, you must not know anyone there. even PBS did a piece recently on its boondoggles.

I am not going to link it but go check out (google) the USAID white paper from Project 2025. It is all laid out. It will return. This time with a Christian 'faith-based' focus.

“3 re-orgs in 5 years. An order back to the office without actual seats for everyone. Constant elevation and then demotion of new, shiny topics. A cadre of young, insular, self-admiring and inexperienced politicals who are there to claim the mantle of others' ideas and kiss the ring for flashy leaders. A movement away from the core development mission and towards hot policy issues. A leader who is obsessed with herself and a team who promotes her every move (look! soccer with poor brown kids!). Meanwhile, a dysfunctional bureaucracy focused on process, sludge, and insider connections that keeps the Agency understaffed and the humans who work there demoralized and over worked.“

The functions of the agency are required by law. He can change the agency’s name but can’t choose not to carry out the law.

Please state the law being broken. And for all the people posting their NGO is shuttering because of this. Seems odd that your NGOs can’t survive because USAID ceases funding. Something is amiss.

Oh, and it’s odd to you that NGOs funded by a major funding source can’t operate without said funding? Do they not teach math in MAGA country?

This is incorrect. Stop getting your information from Twitter. USAID was established by statute after the EO. This is absolutely an unlawful action by the executive.

I’ll help because it’s too hard for you: 22 U.S.C. 6563. This establish USAID as an executive agency.

Hope that helps!

Of course they do. Have to figure out how to sum up all the ammo you need for your guns in case the gubment tries to take away the freedums.
