I think foreign aid is important but it's worthwhile disbanding and rebuilding a donor agency from scratch. Not sure if the existing model can survive.

Not you again. Don't you have a dog to kick or kid to yell at?

I’m not the PP but our acquaintance lost their job as a contractor from the EO.

They bragged for years about their travel all over the world to “educate” the locals on support distribution. But they openly joked by the time they “trained” someone in country and aid arrived (if ever) whomever they “trained” was long gone - so they got to go back 2-3 times to train (or not) to the same country and typically they planned stops on their way of places to visit.

I am not saying there was not some good being done; but maybe 1 out 20 dollars spent was of value from what I heard.

Then Congress should shut it down. This is about more than just the agency, it's about the U.S. straying from being a country of laws and separation of powers and moving to banana republic status.

We have a constitution, laws, and checks and balances. DT is operating as if none of those matter. Get rid of waste, but within the bounds of the law of our country.

All of this. Reasonable minds have always disagreed about the role of government, but NEVER until now has there been any question about following the rule of law.

Any agency was opened by EO and can be dissolved by EO. My former ngo was funded by unsaid….it paid for lots of junkets for senior people.

The functions of the agency are required by law. He can change the agency’s name but can’t choose not to carry out the law.

Please state the law being broken. And for all the people posting their NGO is shuttering because of this. Seems odd that your NGOs can’t survive because USAID ceases funding. Something is amiss.

Here you go, bby https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_Assistance_Act

Oh, and it’s odd to you that NGOs funded by a major funding source can’t operate without said funding? Do they not teach math in MAGA country?

Thanks for the link. The law states he can’t shutter it but he can realign and restructure it, which seems to be what he is doing.

Many NGOs do not manage their revenue well. If an NGO can’t operate without USAID funding then the leadership of that NGO should be let go. Truly impactful NGOs will find other revenue sources and survive.

You have no idea how this works

Enlighten me

First show us where in the US Code it says he can restructure the agency and stop carrying the functions it’s mandated under law.

Sounds like someone who has never worked in NGOs, much less international NGOs. Most NGOs have to do some sort of fee-for-service and/or apply for grants and contracts from funders.

NGOs are often not "charities." They don't and can't survive with occasional donations from the public at large.

Not true. I worked for a very large international education NGO ($30 million) that operates in multiple countries. We receive USAID but it is a small portion of our overall income.

Which one?

It may be one tha can survive on individual donations without spending 30 or 40% on fundraising. Cool.

This is a coup, right?

https://www.cnn.com/2025/02/02/politics/usaid-officials-leave-musk-doge/index.html?cid=ios_app

Two top security officials at the US Agency for International Development were put on administrative leave Saturday night after refusing to allow officials from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to access systems at the agency, even after DOGE personnel threatened to call law enforcement, multiple sources familiar told CNN.

Personnel from the Musk-created office physically tried to access the USAID headquarters in Washington, DC, and were stopped.

The DOGE personnel demanded to be let in and threatened to call US Marshals to be allowed access, two of the sources said.

Three of the sources said the DOGE personnel wanted to gain access to security systems and personnel files. Two of those sources said also they wanted access to classified information.

USAID Director of Security John Voorhees and his deputy are the latest officials who have been put on leave amid fears that the agency is being intentionally dismantled by the Trump administration. Rumors are swirling that President Donald Trump intends to sign an executive order to fold USAID into the US State Department – a move that Democratic lawmakers say is illegal.

USAID dispenses billions of dollars annually all over the world in an effort to alleviate poverty, treat diseases and respond to famines and natural disasters. The agency’s workforce totals more than 10,000 people (excluding contractors), with two-thirds of them overseas, according to the Congressional Research Service. USAID provided assistance to about 130 countries in fiscal year 2023.

CNN has reached out to the White House and USAID for comment.

Around 60 senior USAID staff were put on leave last week on accusations of attempting to circumvent the executive order on foreign aid. Another senior official was put on leave for trying to reverse that move after finding no evidence of wrongdoing.

One source said the entire USAID public affairs office was put on leave and locked out of their systems.

This is the person who has all the US Treasury payments access, access to your personnel salary and can turn off your salary at whim. And he thinks that the men and women at USAID who work in poor and war torn countries with the goal of making America and the rest of the world a better and safer place are criminals.

And he's also admitted to using some fairly hard drugs. His Board was concerned about him running SpaceX and Tesla. Now he has control of all the payment systems of US Treasury and your personnel files.

Elon Musk attacked the US Agency for International Development on Sunday, calling it a "criminal organisation" after Donald Trump moved to freeze the bulk of Washington's foreign assistance for three months.
The Trump administration has since issued waivers for food and other humanitarian aid. But aid workers say uncertainty reigns - and that the impact is already being felt by some of the world's most vulnerable.

Trump has tasked Musk with cutting the government workforce and slashing what the Republican calls waste and unnecessary spending under the guise of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is now reportedly taking aim at USAID.

"USAID is a criminal organisation," Musk wrote on his X platform, replying to a video alleging USAID involvement in "rogue CIA work" and "internet censorship".

n a subsequent post, Musk doubled down and, without giving evidence, asked his 215 million X followers, "Did you know that USAID, using YOUR tax dollars, funded bioweapon research, including Covid-19, that killed millions of people?"

He did not elaborate on the allegations, which officials in the previous administration linked to a Russian disinformation campaign.

Musk is inciting violence against USAID personnel. This is the same kind of rhetoric that was used in Stop the Steal until people started chanting "hang Mike Pence".

Yeah, you see how much Trump cared about the criminal activity of the Jan 6 protestors who threatened the safety of Mike Pence and Congress. He pardoned them on Day 1 in office, even though some had murdered and maimed law enforcement officers.

It's not about saving money, it's about ending the US foreign policy of democracy promotion in countries led by far-right governments. Friends of Musky. Frusky.
