kids birthday party-They never cut/served the cake.

How long was the party? Maybe you left before rhey served. I have had people leave before we served cake but we definitely served. This is a home party.

At party venues, you only get like 30 min in a party room so cake is served immediately since they want you to get out. Maybe they didn’t have a knife or forgot plates or something.

We have been to a party where the family forgot to order pizza. Another party the family didn’t serve anything. One party mom forgot the cake from home. It happens.

Definitely didn’t leave early-we were one of the last to leave actually. It definitely wasn’t a “forgot” thing as after the birthday child blew out the candles they eventually put the plastic cover back on the cake. So that was a conscious decision-didn’t just forget the cake was there. The whole thing was just bizarre. It’s fine if you don’t have cake but then why have a cake just to have the kid blow out the candles and disappoint all the other kids?

Now imagine being 4 when this happens! My kid is 3 and would be asking about the cake the rest of the day.

I'm 50 and I'd be asking all day, too!

Ok that is just weird. They must be one of those no sugar parents.

I once had a super fancy cake that we ended up not cutting but we had cupcakes and an entire table full of pastries and treats.

That’s when you get someone to go to the store. There’s no excuses for this pathetic cheap party.

Yep. No food + no cake + outdoors in the middle of December = CHEAP

Maybe they moved it to a nearby table and squirrels jumped on it? We put our gingerbread house outside out of curiosity and the squirrels immediately found it and started dragging it away. They’re very hungry this time of year.

Did they open gifts?

Needed the cake for 2 parties I am guessing. Weird. Someone has to ask OP, a friend who was there. Please provide update!

Definitely didn't seem like they forgot.

- I think they couldn’t afford food/cake/venue.
or
- Culture difference( although I personally can’t think of any culture cutting a cake and not giving)

What I dont think is, they knew they were “being cheap.

I'd probably wind up agreeing to buy her a cupcake on the way home just to get her out of there because her association is that birthday=cake, so attending a birthday party and seeing a cake but not being served any would be very hard for her to deal with at age 4.

By age 7 or 8 we'd be able to get her out of there without a problem but we'd be hearing about it for weeks. "Why do you think Joey's parents had that cake and didn't serve it? Do you think that was a fake cake? Do you think the cake tasted bad and that's why they didn't serve it? Will we be serving cake at my birthday because if not I don't want to have a party. Do you think Billy's birthday party next week will have cake and will they serve it and how big will the pieces be and can I have two pieces of cake since I didn't have any cake at Joey's party last month?"

I have to assume these people have no other children.

No truer words have ever been said. Hilariously put! Made me laugh.

OP here-obviously I don’t know any specifics because I don’t really know them but they are a white, blonde family with no accents that I could detect. But again, Don’t know any real specifics about them other than what I could see/hear.

No.

Thought it was just me who thought that is annoying.

This happened at a birthday party I went to 40+ years ago and I never forgot it. We asked if we could have cake and the mom said the cake was for family.

I have a sister who I could totally see doing this. She has all kinds of control issues--food is a big one, but also behavior, who can do what.

But with so little food out at this party, I wonder if they were having a family party later and needed the cake.
