WP piece opens in private window if you are blocked. Has a lot of sweet details re: DeAndre. Mind blowing that he will not get to be 6. Per a neighbor, father was in bad mood @ car issues and he told the neighbor he punched the boy. Kids were living in squalor. Moving people to Ward 3 does not fix violence and dysfunction by magic Does Murch have adequate social workers to be keeping tabs on kids as the population has changed?

No school has adequate social workers. But surely they have enough to keep tabs on the kids at school. I’m not sure what kind of underpaid overworked school miracle worker you think is “keeping tabs” on kids at home.

No, they don’t have enough to support these children. DCPS and DC decided long ago that ward 3 schools get nothing. Not even for those who need it most.

What support would a school have provided?

I cannot fathom any legitimate reason they plead down/drop/ignore/release/sleep on violent crime/gun crime/driver murders on such a regular basis. Yes, sometimes you will lose cases. In what world does that justify only prosecuting forty percent of illegal gun cases? I am FURIOUS that this man had children in his home and FURIOUS he was released after murdering a five year old with his bare hands. The President ultimately is the one with the power to remove the AG but the council, the mayor, Eleanor Holmes Norton need to hear day in and day out that the office is a joke and we are paying for it in bodies and we want him out.

Your larger point might be right but this guys gun was legal. My guess is that the girlfriend wouldn’t testify so they had no choice but to drop the case. That happens a lot with DV cases — if you were that girl, would you testify against this lunatic? Probably not—you’d take off and change your cell number.

It’s a major problem without a good solution. Committing DV is a major indicator for committing other crimes of violence including things like mass shootings.

We don't know that the girlfriend wouldn't have testified. And USAO routinely declines to prosecute cases where the evidence is pretty good (see DC Crime Facts for a rundown). And that's what should drive us all nuts about USAO. DC juries can be tricky, sure, but criminal justice outcomes really aren't binary. That is, there is value to the public in bringing cases to trial even if they don't result in a conviction. Even with an acquitted, but having to sit through a trial can have a sobering effect on the defendant. It can also encourage the defendant's partners to walk away. And it can encourage child services to take a closer look at the family. But all USAO prosecutors care about is a perfect conviction record and so none of this apparently matters to them.

Hopefully if Deandre ever serves time in prison, he will be released as a returning citizen in free housing again in NW. It would be a shame to lose a character like this - he is part of our culture and community.

How could he be possibly released after something like this??

They are protected and told the law is just a suggestion for them. The courts and government use "discretion".

Connecticut Heights had a shooting.

They all need to be housed together in their own neighborhood with high security away from the public.

If they are low skilled, they shouldn't be given free rent when they can move somewhere less expensive and pay their own rent.

Mary Cheh was no saint either. She was as lawless as they come.

Well certainly I would assume a child being treated the way described in the article would have bruises and perhaps behavior indicative of child abuse that a well-equiped school would know to look out for and identify and seek help or information.

Why does an able-bodied 32 year old need a voucher? Why wasn’t his voucher revoked once he behaved violently? The DC government was basically enabling this criminal and monster to carry on without any consequences to his behavior.

As of Jan. 31, DC Public Schools had 29 social worker vacancies and 36 school psychologist openings, according to city data.

Hell no they shouldn't! That would be a disaster.

Teachers are all mandated reporters. You don’t need a social worker to report abuse. But the ME found no bruises or other indications of child abuse so not much for a teacher to report.

Why do you assume he was on the voucher and it wasn't just the mom and kids?

I'm sure he's on social security disability for addiction issues or mental health. The voucher extends from that. it's life long --you never lose the voucher in DC. They are good.

The dad was the one on the voucher

This. Is. The. Problem.

I get we need to help people with mental health but if they’re unfit and too unwell to work then they are too unwell to parent and live in a community.
