Two child homicides in Cleveland Park/Van Ness apartment buildings in eight days

For the second time in eight days, a small child has been killed in Cleveland Park/Van Ness, and both are being treated as suspicious:

Sunday's incident happened eight days after a 1-year-old was killed in an apartment building eight blocks to the south on Connecticut. It's being investigated as a homicide.

Sunday's incident took place at an apartment building that has been declared as nuisance property by MPD and the attorney general.

I know the crime deniers will say there's nothing to see here, but this is really disturbing.

Tragic, and it says the 5YO is routine death investigation, cardiac arrest, injured in fall, not homicide (yet). The 1YO child abuse victim from MD was ruled homicide (10 percent of child fatalities in DC are children who reside in MD).

In the past the annual child death reports indicated deaths from neglect or abuse. About 6 percent of child deaths in DC were from child abuse or negligent homicide. After age 12 the highest cause of death is homicide. Most child deaths in DC occur in Ward 8. Now, they don't report this break out. Section VI explains why, and I think it is tragic. https://cfsa.dc.gov/sites/default/files/dc/sites/cfsa/publication/attachments/2022%20Annual%20Child%20Fatality%20Report%20FINAL%20DRAFT%20-%2002%20February%202024.pdf

I also found this article when looking for statistics, and it is disturbing about our government's response to child abuse:

The death of the 5yo is being treated as "suspicious."

This is just horrifying. Why was the child from Upper Marlboro in an apartment in DC. Where is the outrage?

I would assume that the kid was being watched by either a friend or a family member. Or was visiting someone with their parent(s). Unfortunately, kids this age are most at risk from their own parents, or partners of their parents.

Or the family has moved to Northwest Washington.

I don't understand how a fall could leave to cardiac arrest...

“cardiac arrest” just means the heart stopped. it doesn’t mean what caused it.

I wonder how a 5 yr old suffers a fatal fall. That seems too old to fall out a window but could have done something like jump off a bunk bed.

Im very troubled. We just moved to upper nw from downtown seeking a safer and more peaceful environment. I heard about the first child death, but hadn’t heard of the other. I’m sure it has to do with the formerly homeless moved into the apartment buildings. It’s no surprise that many of them are mentally unwell and need more supervision/supprt. The narrative of the former social worker linked above is very telling and also not at all surprising. There has been a sea change in the culture around foster care—removing Black children from homes where they might have been in danger is seen as racist in ggexssje if George Floyd murder. Whoever supports this shift should have a very guilty conscience. They have these child deaths on their hands.

This also happened at Connecticut House.

Since being declared a nuisance property by Racine it has only had more and more violence. MPD is there frequently.

This is so tragic.

The injury was likely reported as a "fall" to 911. Likely the child was harmed by adults, ie, beaten to death. Cardiac arrest just means the heart stopped. MPD posted on ND and said there were persons of interest identified re: the 5 year old today. I have not seen that anyone was arrested in the death of the 1 year old.

We were at Bread Furst and saw and heard a big emergency response. So very sad to learn the cause. RIP little guy.

Assume he was a Murch student and that the school will provide support to those who knew him.

I have 2 properties with voucher-holder tenants. The problem is not that the tenants hold vouchers, it's more likely that the management did not properly screen them, check background and references. My tenants are terrific.
