What does I don't "really" drink mean (to you)?

Really? Lying is more acceptable to you than responsibly and moderately imbibing?

There is no acceptable amount that is healthy. But if he said that then drinkers would get upset.

I don’t see where I said drinking was healthy. But responsible, moderate drinking can be part of a healthy life, just as eating a steak or a bowl of ice cream can be. You don’t need to be abstinent to be healthy. This black or white thinking is so off-putting and frankly childish. It’s how I thought when I was 8.

It isn't childish because it is correct. There is nothing good that you get from drinking alcohol. And I honestly,
What do you care what I think? If you read the latest studies alcohol is responsible for six different cancers. But. Go ahead and drink. I don't care if you rot your brain or liver. As long as you don't drink and drive it is your life.

No one knows what I think about alcohol but while I don't push you to stop alcoholics will push you to drink or call you names. Like you pp. Maybe you are the immature one. Eh?

These things are not the same. Steak has protein, ice cream has calcium, alcohol has poison. There isn't a nutritional value in alcohol, especially the way some of y'all drink it.

You'll try some "red wine has..." and so does a tomato, without the carcinogens.

So yeah, those of us who don't drink (at all) will often hedge it a bit ("I don't really drink") because y'all tend to freak out when we say it's not for us at all.

Could mean a recovering alcoholic who wants to keep it private.
Or it could mean someone who is an active alcoholic and wants to try to drink less and wants to keep it private.
Basically, whatever the reason, he wants to keep it private.

To me it can mean anything from one drink a week to one drink a year

+1 I'm in this category for this reason. I used to drink moderately, and drank heavily for a short period of time as a young adult. Over time, it was increasingly difficult for me to metabolize alcohol (well, everything, but especially alcohol). I didn't feel well for multiple days after drinking moderately/heavily.

I'm now in my late 40s. I still like the taste of some alcohol, and enjoy a drink maybe once a month. I'll have multiple drinks maybe once a year.

I don’t really drink. In the last year I’ve had two drinks.

It always means the same thing no matter how you say it. It means they don't drink.

I used to drink very occasionally (low tolerance), then stopped altogether when I went on a bunch of meds for some serious health issues.

I say I don't really drink when in reality I don't drink, period. It's just that the former sounds a bit softer (less blunt) than the latter.

This person is the reason we add the qualifier, "really" in our response.^ She has such an issue with alcohol that there is no room for an occasional drink a few times per year.

It just means they rarely drink now.

I know this is a rare concept in the DC area but many of us just have a few drinks a year.

I watched the video, it was just a deflection. The man doesn't drink at all.

why would a 14 year old child need to be lied to about this?
Americans are so weirdly puritanical

Why do people think there has to be justification to not drinking?

I’ll have a glass of champagne at weddings and holidays and maybe an interesting cocktail at dinner at a restaurant 2-3x a year. I actually wish I could drink more tbh but I have mast cell issues that make it a pain.
