Educated flight out of DC?

DC offers a wealth of job opportunities and a vibrant living environment tailored to the post-college lifestyle.

Those damn pesky facts continue to get in the way of another DCUM narrative.

This report is analyzing metro areas, DC it is not limited to people only in the district. Most of these "DC graduates" do not chose to live in the district. They live in MD or VA instead.

Partner and I fit this profile. AU grad. Lawyer. Fed.

There is NO WAY my partner and I would consider living in DC now; not with kids.

That's your choice. My kids did great growing up in DC. Growing up with high income in DC is a completely different experience than growing up poor or middle class in DC.

High income will do well anywhere. With the right income you can completely insulate yourself from the crime and dysfunction of DC.

How is that different from insulating yourself from the crime and dysfunction of Virginia or Maryland? Take a trip to the SW Virginia coal country or Danville and you’ll see that Virginia isn’t some magical paradise.

What do we think that number is? 750k? I guess it depends on other assets like family $. But at what point would you say someone would be reasonably able to do this?

Not sure what the number is. But I do know what the lifestyle looks like. It’s a house in Spring Valley, Tunlaw, or Palisades large enough for comfortable entertaining and probably a pool (these folks have never heard of the Hearst or Jellef pools). Both kids in private. Live in or full time nanny. One Tesla and a vintage beater car (that is actually an expensive classic car) for street cred. Vacation home on Nantucket or a lake in New England. One spouse “works from home” in a consultant role (his/her parent’s friends hire them for a largely no show job) and serves on charity boards. They occasionally slum-it and eat at Cactus Cantina, but feel much more comfortable at Millie’s or catered dinner at home. These are the folks with kids having a “dream” life in DC. The kids of not rich, but educated parents who have to go through metal detectors at JR everyday, not so much.

Just to be clear...this very wealthy family you describe does in fact live in DC according to your scenario and I assume they are educated.

So, in fact it is not an example of "educated flight out of DC".

It’s the schools, stupid.

To paraphrase carville
Not really calling anyone stupid by the way.
Just that it’s obvious.

Under fenty/rhee there was alot of hope that the school options would improve but now they are worse than ever and even Wilson or whatever it’s called now is not safe enough for regular kids. Educated parents want their kids to get a good education.

60% of jackson-reed lives in-boundary, and the vast majority of the 40% that live out of boundary attended an in-boundary feeder school...the demographics continue to skew wealthier and whiter and the white population is the most-represented race at nearly 40% of the school population.

I doubt you know much about the demographics of Jackson-Reed or even live in DC for that matter. You don't even know the name of the school.

Just did a two second google search and it came up with a student arrested at Whitman with a gun and a student arrested at Churchill with a weapon.

Also, VA is installing metal detectors at football games because of recent incidents at high school games.

So…not sure anyone is immune from this…but at least they get caught vs the kids actually shooting up the schools in GA, Nashville, etc.

This is the second gun found at JR this year. There was never a real gun found at Whitman, but nice try confuse everyone though.

What about the weapon at Churchill, the metal detectors at VA football games…the gun at Potomac High School (public, not the private one in VA), the kid murdered in the bathroom of Joppatown HS in MD (just died on Tuesday), the Loudon county kid with a gun and gang ties, etc.

How many other suburban incidents do you need…they keep going.

You were able to find those suburban stories in the professional media because the incidents were outliers. They were newsworthy. You won’t find any stories of the JR guns in the professional media because it’s commonplace. It’s not newsworthy until there are running gun battles at JR, which happens from time to time.

Wow…that’s some ridiculous mental gymnastics you are using there.

Again…I spent all of two minutes searching for them. I could find dozens more if I wanted.

Surprising that you just gloss over a suburban murder that happened just this past week.

Forgot to mention multiple gun arrests at BCC high school, as well as the annual violence at the Walter Johnson / BCC football game. Two years in a row…guess that’s tradition now.

Yes, educated people are leaving DC. This is why housing prices are dropping so precipitously.

WTF, ward 4 used to be safe, but Bowser has ruined it. It is only a matter of time before ward 3 becomes overrun with crime as well.
