Terrible dysfunction at UC administration

Never a problem, never confused, never mixed signals, and on the rare occasion when I do need to call, the call is answered by a human and the service is prompt and friendly! And they ended the protests as quickly as they popped up. Looking at you UCLA where a judge had to friggen intervene to give Jewish students access to their classes this fall.

You do know that at USC the cops let anti-protesters throw fireworks on children? And the administrations mess of a graduation cost them millions of dollars right?

USC is permanently closed to the public. That's not an institution that has its stuff together, it's just an embarrassing place that can't figure out how to deal with issues, so it closes its ivory gates. USC should be ashamed for its graduation response, and it's good that donors are pulling out quickly.

Bureaucracy, outdated systems, too many opinions, and layer upon layer of dysfunction.

William and Mary is public and not like this

I’m the PP who works at a large and well known public university. I work with many others in different public universities.

If you haven’t personally experienced dysfunction, that doesn’t mean it isn’t raging behind the scenes. Some sections can be decently run and mostly work and you can get lucky with a smooth ride for four years. But, other sections are going to be a sh$t show. It’s the nature of the beast.

Don't expect a private school experience at an average UC

That was all that needed to be said.

OP here. To be clear. I don't mind so much the admin incompetence IF it is limited to the administrative side of things. I don't need red carpet service. In fact, I don't want half of my $70,000 going to red carpet service. What I do want is stellar academics, and I started this whole thread because I'm worried that the administrative incompetence is a sign of general incompetence. But I don't know. That's why I posted.

Berkeley has a great education. UCLA has a very good education. There's no UC that's going to give you an incompetent education. What is DC's major?

Biology.

The UCs are overcrowded and chaotic. Hope you are ready to pay for more than 8 semesters because kids have to stay longer since they can’t get the necessary classes to graduate

This would make for a great news story. Parents should know.

For who? DC parents-the 10 of them that are in the UC system. Californians won't care, that's for sure.

Berkeley should be in the top 10 and the fact that it is not is ridiculous.

California schools are always a target, but the fact is they provide an affordable accessible higher education, and are a critical tool for social mobility while also being top research institutes.

They are not, and never have been, plush, roll out the red carpet institutions.
However you will graduate with little debt and receive a pretty outstanding education. If you need to be hand held, they’re probably not the right school.

In fact it’s very against the culture to want to be hand held. Try telling the Berkeley subreddit that you want to have something timely done, and they’ll mock you for being entitled. It’s a culture that embraces being independent and challenged to defend for yourself.

No kidding. It’s like a tourist freaking out about dirty subway stairs in the NY Metro and concluding that NYC has terrible public transportation.

Exactly. This is the primary reason it rubs me the wrong way when affluent DCUM parents post about UCs. If you’re just desperately searching for prestige, that’s not what you’re going to get. It’s a state school.

UCLA has been a disaster for my neighbors kid. Paying tons of money for a chaotic mess. They regret not going to UMD.

exactly. I attended a SLAC at the same time my sister and brother were at CAL. I’ll always remember watching my sister go through the insane process of trying to register for classes. Meanwhile, I got sick on the day of registration and was unable to complete my forms. The next day I got a call from the Registrar telling me she had signed me up for everything I wanted, even contacting professors to get approval as needed!
