Do A meet families ever take vacation during summer swim season?

I haven't read all the posts, but wouldn't it be a better strategy to encourage your swimmer to work hard and drop time? Kiddos earn their spot for A meets--if you kiddo wants it enough, the will work for it.

I grew up somewhere where age year-round swimming didn't practice in August and the summer season ended during the last week of July. No one on swim team took a vacation between when school let out the week after Memorial Day and the swim team banquet. But some families would have their minivans packed and ready to drive all night to Hilton Head (it was the midwest and the early 90s) as soon as the banquet ended.

I was just an ok swimmer and remember being so relieved the year the 2 swimmers above me went to a week of overnight camp and I finally got to swim my favorite stroke in the A meet!

It's fun to see that this is still a topic of speculation!

Yes. We go to church, too.

What a clown question.

I have a DC with a terrible swim birthday who is the youngest in an age group where kids grow. So DC is already physically outclassed and can't close the time gap through hard work alone. Subbing in is the only way they will access A meets this year.

Same with both of my kids. When they’re at the bottom of their age group there are July birthday kids who are almost two years older that also swim at intense year round clubs. Hard work is not always enough.

Similar with a 31 May birthday but while it’s a hard yr when DC is at the bottom of the age group, they still make the A meets. It’s possible.

You have to understand that that really depends on the team, right? A large team with 8 strong 12 year old girls does not have the room for a prepubescent 11 year old to break through.

Our team has a bunch of families taking vacations this weekend. First time of the summer and probably only time this season.

I'm guessing younger or not that fast b/c the open champs meet starts next week. It is the highest PVS meet for long course this season. Any ages can go if they make the cuts.

And then the weekend after some fast 12Us may miss meets because that’s the 12U LC champs weekend.

The fastest kids in this area won’t be missing practice 2 or more weeks before these championship meets. Since open champs includes next Sat…better swimmers will be out next Sat.

Year round swimmers don't finish LC season (club) until the end of July. Once they get their training break (August), then it is time for vacation.

I'm talking mostly about HS age, and some MS age swimmers.

Senior zones is the first week in Aug.

Our team was missing double digits of typical A meet swimmers today. The meet went pretty much how you would expect.
