Anyone else PUMPED about Time Trials

+1

Sounds like our team. You only know the drama when you are in the inner circle.

Sometimes the drama gets bad buts it usually the parents who make it worse. They want blood. Kinda sad when summer swim is so short. Just have fun. No one is going to the Olympics.

I am an introvert but all the volunteering has made me a lot of pool friends to hang out with. I love the community.

Totally this. All that time spent together on deck over the years has made the pool a place that this introvert feels comfortable. I look forward to the swim sprint all year.

What's a good beginner volunteer position for a fellow introvert?

I would suggest timing or working at the table. You will chat with 1-3 other people. If you don’t want to talk to anyone then Marshall. But you are all alone so if you want to get to know people don’t do Marshall

No - you have to "police" people. And you're in the sun.

Ribbons/awards is the easiest and best job. You're sitting at the table with other people but you just put stickers on the ribbons. Just wear earbuds and the other people at the table will leave you alone. You usually are under an awning or tent, so if it's raining, you stay dry. I've been to some pools that have data/awards inside an air conditioned club house. The only negative is you have to stay until after the meet ends to get the stickers from the last events.

Runner is a great position. You get to walk around and interact with a lot of different people at each meet (timers, S&T). I would despise ribbon writing, personally. I’d rather be moving around and engaging with people. I love clerk of course, but you need to be pretty comfortable working with kids for that to be a good fit.

If a child can doggy paddle to the end but can’t dive in at all, can swim team make sense?

Yes. You can do an in water start if necessary. But the kids just sort of jump in for freestyle most of the time.

What are the duties of a Marshall?

Our drama has been caused by a very obnoxious pool board and junior coach hiring. The season itself it typically less drama because it's so fast an intense, no one has any energy left for the drama. That and the fact that sports based on times makes it much more cut and dry. You either are in the top or not. No questions and no room for favoritism. And everyone gets to join in on the fun!

Sounds like my pool!

You "police" the swimmers and spectators. Typically, you wear a safety vest (like traffic/construction workers wear) and you'll have a sign that says "Quiet at the Start." You raise the sign to quiet everyone right before the swimmers start. There are usually areas on the deck where only swimmers are allowed and there may also be areas where no one, except meet officials, is allowed. So you are a traffic cop keeping swimmers and/or spectators off that area of the deck. You're on your feet, constantly reminding people to be quiet and not enter a certain area.
