Typically, you wear a safety vest (like traffic/construction workers wear) and you'll have a sign that says "Quiet at the Start." You raise the sign to quiet everyone right before the swimmers start. There are usually areas on the deck where only swimmers are allowed and there may also be areas where no one, except meet officials, is allowed. So you are a traffic cop keeping swimmers and/or spectators off that area of the deck. You're on your feet, constantly reminding people to be quiet and not enter a certain area.[/quote]
