Anyone else PUMPED about Time Trials

Nope but good for you that you are. I'm burned out on summer swimming -- probably swim parenting in general -- after 10+ years. And not up for small talk with the other parents that I only see for 5-6 weeks/year. I was excited like you early on though.

I'm here and it sucks. I miss the fun days of the little kids. Although it seems for the younger kids the parents make drama now too

Can someone explain to me what time trials are. I'm new to all this and can not figure out what is happening with it. So is it different from A and B meets?

What are some of those things, besides sitting and swimming?

What do you mean sitting? That might be your problem. No parent with kids swimming in the meet should be sitting. Get involved, help out and don't be a leech.

It's different from the A and B meets in that it's only one swim team at the trials. Swimmers can pick whatever events they are eligible for and get a time. It helps the coaches get an idea where each swimmer is, both for practice grouping and A meet placement (although the upcoming B meet will also be a factor for that).

I had to make a fuss to get my youngest on 8&U, but last night at practice they were practicing with the starting buzzer and my 7yr old swam a time that got my almost 9yr old into a few A meets last year. I am hopeful he does well tomorrow so the coach and rep will drop their snark about “giving him a chance to see how he does”.

It’s not snark to say you want to see how a 7 year old new to swim team does. The fact that you know your 7 year olds time from practice is a red flag, although you “raising a fuss” about a 7 year olds placement has already cemented your reputation as “that parent” with the coaches and reps. Please know that you are exhausting for us to deal with.

+1

The drama on our team has started already. Some parents sucks.

I'm ready! Our pre-season has been super drama filled and exhausting but time trials always reminds me of why I do so much.

Love seeing the littles all nervous and shy but then out of their shell after the raice and everyones telling them how awesome they did.

My favorites are seeing kids that were so-so swimmers last year but had such a blast with summer that they decided to take up year round and come back raring and ready to go

Can someone give examples of the drama they are experiencing? Trying to figure out why so many people see drama in summer swim team and want to be prepared.

+1. We had a parent like this already this season as well. Team reps have lost total respect for the mom and how aggressive she was.

Our drama has been caused by a very obnoxious pool board and junior coach hiring. The season itself it typically less drama because it's so fast an intense, no one has any energy left for the drama. That and the fact that sports based on times makes it much more cut and dry. You either are in the top or not. No questions and no room for favoritism. And everyone gets to join in on the fun!

This is tough. My kids are 9 and 7, so they line up that they are both the oldest in their group every other year.
We’re in our “development year” of the cycle, so I am excited to have my Saturdays free, and just relax and have fun this season working the concessions and timing. I love Friday morning breakfasts and having coffee with my friends the other days.

I am also thankful that the older one is swimming 50s, so they can’t compare times. I have 2-3 years until we face the reality that the younger one may be a faster swimmer - not age adjusted, but flat out faster than his older brother.

I have a 9 and 8 (my 9 is 9 for summer swim, turns 10 in August so they're actually 18 months my two older kids) and last summer, my oldest consistently beat his younger brother. They both decided to do year round swim at a low key club, and there was a bit of drama when my 8yo got invited to the 9 and under relay but my 9yo did not. He's slowly coming to terms that his younger brother is a stronger swimmer than him, but it's been a rough realization for him.

Ugh no. Of all kids sports, swim meets are the most boring

I am a team rep and have club swimmers and I say this about my own swimmers. I sincerely don't know how anyone will do until I see the times from Time Trials. For my club swimmers, this is meters instead of yards. Starts are from the deck and not the blocks. This impacts times. I have kids in a 50 SCY from blocks are just not quite the same starting from a pool deck.

Little kids can look good at practice but fall apart in a real race. We see that a lot. They are legal until they are in an actual race or they false start. And why are you all timing at practice? I hate that. Gives inaccurate data.

In the strongest possible terms, I beseech you, get a life.
