True. Nancy was originally a nickname for Ann, Liam for William, Harry for Henry, etc. |
Ellen, Lisa, Nora, Sally, Kate... these names all started as nicknames but are now "real" names. Is PP going to freak out about an Ellen who isn't actually named Eleanor, or a Lisa who isn't "really" a Melissa?
So dumb. |
All those examples are fine names! Sorry but, you are going to be judged by your name. I can't tell you how many people who have unique names tell me that they hate it when they have to say their name and then explain where they got it. Unless you are living in LA where the names are weird Bambi is going to have a tougher time than Jennifer. It doesn't make us narrow minded to point out the obvious truth. Same with people who use They/them as pronouns. They aren't getting hired as much. I would not like to be named Bambi and sure I could change it but, naming yourself is also challenging! Why not give you kid a name with options and give them a chance? |
But some names don't feel complete...Poppy? |
I know a bunch of people who did this. That's why I gave the example of Danny to Dan. Real life one. Know two Jennys who went to Jennifer and a Betsy who switched to Elizabeth and a Stacy to Stacia. Zero harm in options I guess. |
They don’t feel complete to you. They do feel complete to others. Who are you to judge? |
Again, you think they are fine but others might not. Tiffany was never going to be taken seriously in my grade school. But now there are adult Tiffany’s doing adult things like being a professor and so you think the name is fine. Why is Jenny ok but Polly is not? |
Absolutely not. |
I really dislike Polly, not sure why.
Pippa is ok. I like Poppy a lot. To me, it does sound like a nickname and I'm the sort who would want to give a formal name and use Poppy as a nickname. (Of course, this will cue the people here who insist that parents can't decide in advance what nicknames they are going to call their children, despite the world being filled with Jennifers and Abigails and Elizabeths whose parents called them Jenny and Abby and Lizzie from day one.) So I would name her Penelope and call her Poppy. But Poppy alone would be fine too. |
In my experience people who name their daughters Lulu or Lola or Poppy name their sons Theodore or Alexander or Henry. Which complicates the “anti-misogyny” argument because fun is not something they value for sons.
None of them are namjng their boys “Danny” as a full name. Or Timmy or Bobby or Dave. |
I am giving my opinion just like you. Ask yourself why you think it comes off as judgment when I have a different opinion? You sound judgy. If op didn't want opinions than they could have not started this thread. Nobody actually has to take my advice! If you are so easily offended than just skip by things you don't agree with. |
Yes! I agree pp 1,000 percent. |
What are you talking about? Liam has been used as a nn for William forever. |
Tiffany is a very old name of Greek origin. https://www.thebump.com/b/tiffany-baby-name |
Did it say "Jenny" or "Jennifer" on the birth certificate? "Dot" or "Dorothea?" I'm guessing you don't know--I mean, I never laid eyes on the birth certificate of any of my high school classmates or co-workers-that would be weird. The point is, giving a child a REAL name gives them the option of using that OR a nickname. |
