Where did your 3.6 GPA child get in?

DD had about a 3.6 unweighted and applied test optional. She was waitlisted at W&M and will be attending through Spring Pathway/semester in London if she doesn't get a call in the coming weeks. T20 apps would have been highly unreasonable for her. YMMV especially if he can get a high score.

NP. PP, do you mind my asking where else your DD applied and what her outcomes were? And is this from a private or public. Thanks!

She is at a Catholic school, has 4.0 W. Her list was heavy on safeties. I'm glad of that having seen the emotional toll on some kids of so many rejections. W&M was reach and she's very happy to have the pathway option.

VT - waitlisted
accepted at all of:
Gettysburg - merit
JMU
GMU
CNU
Stetson - merit & honors
Mt. St. Mary's - merit & honors
High Point - merit & honors

My oldest had a 3.6 and was delusional too. I could not stop her applying schools out of her reach Boston University, Northeastern, Georgetown but I forced her to apply safety schools. UMASS Amherst, UConn, Loyola and she went to a safety school as did not get into any top school

your son may be one of those kids who wants safeties that don't sound like safeties (bcs his friend won't know what they are) - like University of Puget Sound, etc

Is not knowing what a school is better than thinking it’s a safety school? If I’m a high school kid who is in the process of researching and applying to colleges but I haven’t heard of a school, I’m guessing it’s not a very good school.

T20 - No.
T50 - Absolutely!

3.6 from our private gets in to Wake ED; NYU ED2; Case (EA - lots of interest); and possibly
Lehigh
Bucknell
(depending on who else is applying)

I guess you are agreeing with me.. Except for NYU, the others are not T20.

WF is a 3.8 at our private's SCOIR/Naviance data. No 3.6 have been admitted in at least 5 years.

I can add that Lehigh and Bucknell are definitely possible. Bucknell goes down to a 3.3-3.4 with ED (in the past 2 years). Lehigh similar.

Wake is not. Emory is not. Those are 3.75+ schools, even with ED (from our private school.)

Bucknell is not as selective as folks on DCUM make it out to be. My DC chose not to apply but his friend with a similar profile got in (3.7-3.8ish weighted GPA, FCPS with good rigor and strong test scores).

But for finance or consulting, bucknell is a great option…..

For some examples/real stories:

What colleges did you low
GPA (<3.6) and high ACT/SAT (34/1500+) students get accepted to?

So how realistic is this link?
Bc there’s a ton of stats here. Are people telling the truth?

Why would high school students lie to their peers about their lackluster GPAs? Also, people seem to forget that 50% of the students are below the average GPA!

You can check naviance for your own school, or make decisions based on a lot of anonymous teens on reddit. Which do you think is more reliable?

If you live in Maryland, he will have a tough time getting into UMD. They have top notch engineering and computer science programs. A good way to increase chance of admissions to UMD for engineering is to have him do Terp Young Scholars’ engineering course over the summer between junior and senior years of high school. If he does well in the class, the school takes it as a strong indicator he will do well in the engineering program at UMD.

NYU seems wrong for this kid, but I like the Lehigh/Lafayette/Bucknell suggestions.

OP, I caught what you said about encouraging him to sleep and maintain some balance. Good for you. Your kid will probably not get in everywhere he thinks he will, but the balance will pay off in the long run.
