I also worry we'll see a lot more crime and bad people. BR is, at present, a pretty safe, wealthy enclave where teens can roam freely without worry. Sure there's crime, but it's mostly not locals. We've all seen the Nike Store robbery videos. Purple line will be low cost transit for people in lower income areas and that isn't always a great combination.

It's also a giant waste of public money, but I guess that ship has sailed. Ugh. Just wish it wasn't happening.

Also, poor Tacombi with that hideous construction plaza blocking all foot traffic for years on end. I hope they are getting a rent concession.

Log off. There are plenty of non wealthy residents in Bethesda who need public transport. Also, aren’t we moving towards more sustainable modes of transportation?!

Are there a lot of residents of Bethesda that are dying for public transport? Where are they going?

The staff who serve your coffee want to get to work more easily. Is that such a bad idea? They're coming from the East. They just want to clean your stores and serve your McDonald's. Cut them some slack.

+ Bethesda station sees something like 4000-6000 boardings a day.

That’s not what the other poster said, they talked about how people in Bethesda want mass transit for commuting.

I just hope that the purple line will be maintained and will have an effective police presence to keep it usable, unlike the current Metro.

You should move. The rest of us like city close in suburban living. Take your xenophobia back with you to the cornfields of Iowa.

The purple line will let people go from Bethesda to silver spring very quickly and painlessly. Id love to go meet my friends at Denizens and not have to drive back

I am not PP but I guess I am racist if I don't want crime. It's not rocket science to see who is doing the looting and carjackings? Funny, I've never seen a 15yr old in a Landon hoodie rob Nike.

Say what you want but there are not many looters/carjackers with Bethesda addresses. They come from other areas and come via public transit.

I guess the question is whom do you think actually WANTS crime. That's always the weirdest discriminator/declaration - who wants sh!t schools and crime??? Maybe the question is who you think deserves them?

Montgomery County...people who think a world without police is ideal...people who don't lock up criminals for car jacking, regardless of age.

That’s just your partisan talking point and not the opinion of average MoCo residents.

You probably still have that stupid sign on your lawn, don’t you.

Do you actually talk to real humans or just rail against silly stereotypes?

Op isn’t wrong to worry. Ever since Tysons got the metro, we have seen crime go up. I live a mile from Tysons in McLean, so we are acutely aware of the changes . The only difference is Fairfax county police does not coddle criminals like in MoCo, thank god for small mercies.

No need for anyone to clutch their pearls or flee to the cornfields just yet.

Purple line isn’t scheduled to open for another 3 years, and there’s only a 106% chance it will be delayed even further…

Some neighborhoods in Bethesda used to contribute to private cops. I am guessing this was less pressing during COVID when everyone was home, but might come back with the Purple Line opening (whenever that is)?

Bethesda has more crime since the moment the first houses were built there in an old corn field yet funny how there was never concern about that. Crime also goes up whenever high rise apartments are built as well but we hear no protests against the crime induced by luxury condos hm?

Yes we do. Transit causes crime. Luxury condos cause crime (also non-luxury condos, and rental apartments of any sort). Sidewalks cause crime. Parks cause crime. Stores cause crime. These are all things I have heard people say in real life. Which, actually, raises the question of how come I haven't heard anybody say bike lanes cause crime. Maybe I don't go to enough meetings.

Anything beyond standing in an empty field "causes crime". Why do these people want to live anywhere near DC if they are so averse to being near other people?

Move to Great Falls, Falls Church, Rockville or Gaithersburg. You could also rent in Georgetown or Foxhall

I agree with OP - look at Pentagon City Mall. It used to be nice but it's kind of a mess now.

The mall was built many years after the Pentagon City Metro station opened. And since the mall opened in the 80s crime (theft) has always been a problem. Pentagon City is still one of the nicer, viable malls in the DC region.

Also, Bethesda already has the red line Metro. Is OP afraid of poorer folks from Langley Park riding all the way to Bethesda on the Purple Line? I expect the most of the people riding to Bethesda Row on the Purple Line would be coming from nearby the Chevy Chase Lake station and Downtown Silver Spring, which is a fairly expensive place to live.
