Your hair looks gorgeous. It cost ... what?!

This was in Bethesda.

I'm the one who now cuts her own hair -- I think I was paying close to $300 (especially if you count tip) at the Bethesda salon I went to -- I got a cut and color and maybe something like toner/special conditioning treatment. I didn't get anything like extensions, or highlights on top of the color, and I wasn't going to the most expensive stylist at the salon (I know that the owner charged more). I can see it easily hitting $400 if you are getting extensions or multiple layers of color treatment or keratin or something (although I think they won't do keratin at the same time as color, if I remember correctly).

No apologies and I’d spend my last few bucks on this self-care - so relaxing and enjoyable for me.

I agree. My hair is important to me. I can't believe some people are so cheap.

Imagine what people are saying about you and how pathetic it is that you value you hair so much!

It shows.

Have you gotten a pay increase in the last five years? Your stylist lives off these services. Even if they are the owner they have non personal expenses. Your service fees are how they stay open.

SMH

My stylist went from $65 for a cut in 2020 to $125 now and it is harder than ever to get an appointment with her. My salary most definitely has not doubled in the past 4 years. Has yours?

There is a difference between the owner of a large salon who has to pay other people and a one woman salon who pays only herself. She can charge exactly what she needs to in order to cover her rent and supplies and make a tidy little profit and her prices have gone up as inflation has risen so clearly she is aware of this. Why should I tip her?

How often is this done?

I do a step above greatclips - like, a $65 haircut + tip. And then I color my own hair. I like the hair color results better than when I was getting it done professionally for about $80, although it's not as good as getting it done at the more expensive places.

What color product do you use?

There's a John Frieda foam color I like, but the big difference is that I'm going lighter and so it's less harsh and red and more natural-looking. And the coverage is very good, but if it's not perfect, I don't care. I'd rather have a little gray than have all of my hair be a color I don't like.

I get compliments on my hair all the time. I'm known for having great hair. I'm 48 and my hair looks better than any 25 year old.

I also wanted to add that I used to drive 1hr 15min to my salon to get my hair done. When something is good, you keep it. I did this for 10 years.

My gorgeous hair was done in Canada in April, costing 400 CDN. It included color correction, dying, highlights, and the whole shebang. In defense of my stylist, I ruined my hair with a light brown color that turned orange.

You can't believe some people have tighter budgets than you do? Really? Wow. You need to get out a bit more.

What I really need is a good conditioner!

Also, DC hair salons cost way too much for the quality of the cuts. I've been to Paris and other capital cities where it's much cheaper, and the cuts look great.

It's true but it's actually sad, because they don't make a good living.

Then go to college and get a better job! It’s not my job to subsidize crappy job decisions.

Yikes. But you'd be mad if no one took the "crappy jobs" that serve your needs and wants.

I’m used to paying extra for a blow dry (which I’ve always thought is absurd) but last time I decided to do it was an extra $70. Are you kidding me? To dry my hair with a round brush???
