Your hair looks gorgeous. It cost ... what?!

I do a step above greatclips - like, a $65 haircut + tip. And then I color my own hair. I like the hair color results better than when I was getting it done professionally for about $80, although it's not as good as getting it done at the more expensive places.

Feeling like a weirdo that I cut and colour my own hair and get compliments all the time. Anyone else? Is that so unusual?

I have curly/straight/wavy hair so I do a long layered cut and only just started colouring it this year as the silver was turning my hair a cooler tone I didn't like. The only bummer is the hour I lose every four weeks- like clockwork- as my hair grows so fast and I don't like a root line.

Do people really not mind spending so much- or do you actually enjoy it or do you feel it's such a necessity for a pro to do it for it to look good?

Me too. I think it is relatively easy to trim long hair every few weeks and it's pretty easy to color very dark hair, and I have both. If your hair is thick and healthy it's doing the hard work for you.

This is not a "smart option." You will look like you colored your own hair with "L'Oréal type stuff" -- which no one wants.

What I really need is a good conditioner!

Also, DC hair salons cost way too much for the quality of the cuts. I've been to Paris and other capital cities where it's much cheaper, and the cuts look great.

YES!

I pay $650 before tip and taxes to the amazing person who does my color and cut. She is worth every penny.

I can not imagine cutting or coloring my own hair.

But now I want a different one that's outside his skill set and am struggling to find a stylist who charges under $80 as their floor. I don't need a wash, I don't need it blow dried or styled, I definitely don't need dye, I just need someone who can cut layers better than a 40 year old male scientist who learned from YouTube. Maybe I'll wind up at Haircuttery.

I agree and I’m done paying that much.
I learned how to color my own hair during Covid.
I go in twice a year for about 10 highlights on the top of my head but then do an every 4 week color because I’m 57 and a little gray.
I also have super long hair and I’m convinced anyone can cut it so I go in for a cut about 4 times a year at a cheap place.
I probably spend less than $500 a year.

By the way these things are optional. So don’t act like it’s the same thing as the price of milk or gasoline going up.

Did you know you can live and even function in society without ever purchasing milk or gas? (So those things are optional, too)

How did you learn to cut your hair though? Through trial and errors?
There are tons of videos on youtube but I don't know if I have the courage to go through the experimental phase.

My stylist charges by the hour and doesn’t accept tips. But the cost of my usual appointment went up when she changed over to this.

Agree with the bolded!

+1, I've had so few truly good cuts in DC and for what I pay, it's annoying.

I really need a haircut right now and I think I'm just going to go to a Bubbles or Bang and get one of the less experienced people to give me a trim because if my haircut is going to be mediocre anyway, I might as well get out of there for less than $100.

Wow, way to take that at face value. But go on, justify paying below a livable wage for your balayage.

I color my hair and the experimental phase was not great.
