Your hair looks gorgeous. It cost ... what?!

I have curly/straight/wavy hair so I do a long layered cut and only just started colouring it this year as the silver was turning my hair a cooler tone I didn't like. The only bummer is the hour I lose every four weeks- like clockwork- as my hair grows so fast and I don't like a root line.

Do people really not mind spending so much- or do you actually enjoy it or do you feel it's such a necessity for a pro to do it for it to look good?

How did you learn to cut your hair though? Through trial and errors?
There are tons of videos on youtube but I don't know if I have the courage to go through the experimental phase.

I'm the PP whose husband learned to cut my hair from YouTube. I wore it in a pixie for years and short hair is perfect for an "experimental phase" because it needs to be touched up so often, if you mess up, try again next time. (My husband eventually got better at my pixie than the stylists I went to pre-covid.)

I wouldn't cut off six inches as an experiment though. Long hair is riskier. That's why I need a stylist now - if i screw it up at home, it'll be months before I get back to baseline.

Is $125-150 normal for a mediocre cut nowadays? I mean, I just moved to Reston, I did NOT expect to pay MORE for haircuts here than when I lived in Arlington.

How often do you pay $650?

$375 with tip for highlights, lowlights, tone/glaze, cut and dry. I go every 8 weeks. I tried various cheaper things but this looks really good and it makes me feel better.

I pay about $250 for full highlights, including tip. I'm not in DMV, however. I pay about $100 including tip for a great haircut.
I don't know what more you'd get for a $650 color/cut. I can't really afford what I pay now, but I just went back to work after a long absence, so it's part of the cost of having a job in late middle age, I guess. One cannot be gray at work nowadays. Not at my workplace.

But now I want a different one that's outside his skill set and am struggling to find a stylist who charges under $80 as their floor. I don't need a wash, I don't need it blow dried or styled, I definitely don't need dye, I just need someone who can cut layers better than a 40 year old male scientist who learned from YouTube. Maybe I'll wind up at Haircuttery.

Adil at Adil’s salon in arlington.

Only if you want the same haircut as every 50+ year old Arlington SAHM.

When the cut costs $125, how much do you tip the person who washes your hair?

I went to a lady in Germantown to get a cut and color and full highlights and it was terrible and I paid $180. I went to hair cutters in Bethesda several months later for root touch up, highlights, cut and color and it was $260. Price are out of control! I won’t go again until the end of the year.

If you can afford hair cuttery prices I recommend Esperanza at hair cuttery in Greenbelt. She does all hair types and does coloring and cuts.

Try a beauty school with “guest services.”

There are others. Much cheaper and most of the time same or better quality than regular salons.

I am vain; I will eat ramen noodles, drive a used car, wear thrift store clothes, but I will go every month for a trim/highlight/blow out (about $200 to include tip, sometimes products) and manicure & pedicure every two weeks (about $150).

No apologies and I’d spend my last few bucks on this self-care - so relaxing and enjoyable for me.

I have very long hair I color myself and I get it cut twice a year. Learned to color it during covid and I think any reasonable stylist can cut long hair.

I just paid $375 for the same (I do this about three times a year). I get my roots done every four weeks ($150 for color, dry and tip). Pre Covid it was $280 and $125 (both with tip). It is very expensive.

I agree. My hair is important to me. I can't believe some people are so cheap.

Well, I just spent 650.00 for highlights, lowlights, and a really quick trim and blow dry by a highly rated stylist.
It looks fine but certainly not that much better than before when/if I spend the 15 mins it takes to blow dry my hair.
