I think you are underestimating the delusion of parents and kids. If GA is successful in establishing (or being perceived as having established) a "pathway to the pros" the better girls will migrate there from ECNL and it will become a viable (and in time, primary) pathway to college soccer for girls.

Maybe but I doubt it. The girls side is focused on college. Some girls are leaving for the pros but the best girls are still going to college.

DA kicked ECNLs butt. But ECNL is still here better than before. The US pro teams- male or female - cannot be relied on long term. Maybe you can make an argument for the MLS which seems to be having a great run with no end in sight. But not on the women's side.

Maybe over time/

The women need to have league minimium salaries that players can afford to live on before they think about subsidizing youth programs

Be honest + stop cherry picking data points.

Or, put another way, 25 players per team earn 100k or less.

I would not place my kid in a program now based on such macro hypotheticals. And they are hypotheticals based on nothing but reading into quotes here and there about things that “should happen” but not necessarily stated plans on what will happen.

Average D1 instate tuition is 10k, average out of state tuition is 30k. If you get a full ride your kid is making 30k a year playing soccer. They're just being forced to spend it on the college they're attending.

Most college players are on partial scholarship which means they're playing between 4k and 18k per year to attend college. Or put another way they're being paid 6k-12k per year to play soccer.

Suddenly the NWSL minimum doesn't sound that bad.

Exactly, if colleges were giving out full ride scholarships to the entire roster then maybe it would make sense. But usually they give full rides to 2-3 players and everyone else gets partial scholarships or no scholarship at all. Also the ones getting full rides could likely play professionally.

I like how you calculated out what college players actually make.

Playing soccer in college is what parents like because it's a safety net and you get some payoff for all the money spent on youth club soccer. But if your kid was truly talented they're much better off playing professionally.

Choosing a club/league based on a dream academy system, that even if it did exist now, doesn’t mean your kid becomes a pro.

But, imagine being among the .001% of something and only earning 35k a year.

College? You hopefully have a marketable degree as well as the potential to still play pro.

NCAA and Colleges have only themselves to blame. If they would have given all the players full rides nobody would be complaining. The problem is they cheaped out and would only give a small amount of full ride scholarships per team. This diminished the value of their product. Young players are looking at college and thinking if I take this partial scholarship I'm going to have to work my ass off for a sport and to take classes and at the end of 4 years I'll be in debt.

It doesn't make sense.

But at least parents get to send out that Instagram Pic of their kid committing to a college.
