You understand that the 100k is not guaranteed right? |
Name a single team with even two players earning more than 400k? Can you name three players earning 400k in the whole league? |

Something else people don't know about NWSL is that they pay for your housing car and food with per diems while playing.
What this means is even if you're lowest paid you're still getting by comfortably. |
No, they pay people to sponsor you. You live in someone's room and borrow their car. If they paid a real wage they wouldn't need to create a foster care system for their players. |

Most call that paying rent. |
You seem like the type that would send back soup because it's too hot. Whatever.. Look at all the Minor league baseball players or hockey players just begging for an opportunity to play on a MLB or NHL team. NWSL league minimum isn't great but it's also not meant to be a career. If players are good ideally they'll be given a chance to move up on the roster. If not they get dropped and replaced with someone else. It's how all professional sports teams work. |
If it isn’t meant to be a career then why is SYC dad pushing the wonders that a NWSL/GA pathway to pro would offer? A $10,000 - $15,000 athletic scholarship for a degree is being foolish to take when you can live in someone’s spare room for $35k a year? |
No idea what you're talking about. Sounds like you're trying to disparage playing pro vs college. You might want to keep an eye on what's going on with all the NCAA lawsuits. It's gotten so bad that NCAA is begging congress for an exemption so that can keep paying their slaves with scholarships instead of real money. |

And another youth signing into the NWSL. Doesn't make sense, amirite?
Fuller to Angel City FC. |
No, I’m being realistic about such a fully funded academy system happening in the near future. Do I believe such a system will happen? Sure, in time, but not for a decade. It took MLS over 20 years to get that point. I would not place my kid in a program now based on such macro hypotheticals. And they are hypotheticals based on nothing but reading into quotes here and there about things that “should happen” but not necessarily stated plans on what will happen. Support NWSL now, let it grow naturally and safely, and in time this can happen. |
Get smart guy. Playing in college is the same as playing professionally when you're talking about $$$. You just have to break college down. Average D1 instate tuition is 10k, average out of state tuition is 30k. If you get a full ride your kid is making 30k a year playing soccer. They're just being forced to spend it on the college they're attending. Most college players are on partial scholarship which means they're playing between 4k and 18k per year to attend college. Or put another way they're being paid 6k-12k per year to play soccer. Suddenly the NWSL minimum doesn't sound that bad. |
Exactly, if colleges were giving out full ride scholarships to the entire roster then maybe it would make sense. But usually they give full rides to 2-3 players and everyone else gets partial scholarships or no scholarship at all. Also the ones getting full rides could likely play professionally. I like how you calculated out what college players actually make. Playing soccer in college is what parents like because it's a safety net and you get some payoff for all the money spent on youth club soccer. But if your kid was truly talented they're much better off playing professionally. |
.001% will play professionally. Choosing a club/league based on a dream academy system, that even if it did exist now, doesn’t mean your kid becomes a pro. But, imagine being among the .001% of something and only earning 35k a year. College? You hopefully have a marketable degree as well as the potential to still play pro. |
NCAA and Colleges have only themselves to blame. If they would have given all the players full rides nobody would be complaining. The problem is they cheaped out and would only give a small amount of full ride scholarships per team. This diminished the value of their product. Young players are looking at college and thinking if I take this partial scholarship I'm going to have to work my ass off for a sport and to take classes and at the end of 4 years I'll be in debt. It doesn't make sense. But at least parents get to send out that Instagram Pic of their kid committing to a college. |
