MLS Next and GA merging into one organization

From what I have seen with boys in HS currently---most public school kids are playing HS soccer and sticking with ECNL for that reason. Private school kids can fudge and get a waiver.

Something is going to happen on the girls side regarding a "pro pathway". I believe NWSL will partner with GA and create NWSL Next.

Why do you assume there needs to be a pro pathway for girls? College is the pro pathway. Many other sports work this way in the US. Football, baseball, basketball. Why should women’s soccer be different? Because that’s how things work in Europe?

Precisely, to compete with nations that are far better at this socccer development game and have clearly caught up. US Soccer is poorly run but they have demonstrated an understanding of whats going on globally. The Emma Hayes hiring is brillant because of her track record with Euro academies, she will be an amazing coach, and trust shes going to start poo pooing the college system that second she knows how pointless it is in producing world clas players.

How many women make the USWNT, how many play in college? Do you think most girls would be better in a league that can place them on an ACC roster or an IVY roster or playing in a league that offers a remote chance at a pro career?

Feeling insecure about your ECNL investment?

This is what it all comes down to.

Instead of being excited for professional opportunities for young girls they're trying to protect and defend the status quo.

Plenty of GA player on those rosters. What's your point? What you are missing, and not comparing here, just helping those disinformed be better informed, so that they are not misinformed. This is not a either or choice its academy development (pro-pathway eventually) and college.

Plenty of ECNL girls playing professionally. I'm asking about the people thinking GA should turn in a path to the pros and ignore college

What professional opportunities? Can anyone identify even one advantage any of this alignment will give one league over the other? The NWSL has a draft. Teams will take the best players regardless of whether to come from college, GA, NWSL or rec. They do not care about what patch the girl wore or what club she played for - they want to win.

This is happening behind the scenes =] NWSL player here.

Sports just work differently in the US with how colleges are the main pathway. That is not going to change. Outside the US there is no college sports pathway and so they need to have a path to pros. Sure, NCAA and college sports will continue to change. But to college path to pros is deeply engrained in the US sports culture and hoping to go against and change that is a very long, very slow process.

Where is the money for this? There is none on the NWSL side.

You're paying for it, just like now.

I think this will be a good option. And I think it will be win-win. There will still only be very few players that will go on to play pro-ball, but the remainder (and majority) of GA players will still go off to play in college. Because college ball isn't going anywhere and the numerous benefits a college education can provide. Sure, everyone would like to have their daughter play in a theoretical Washington Spirit Academy, but the reality will still be that most of the girls will still eventually go on to play college ball. I'm just spit balling here, but this system will be great for the relatively few players that this makes sense for, for everyone else keep up those college acceptance packets!

Yup. This would just be in addition to what those clubs do. Nobody said they would come out and offer fully covered academies, those might come with time, but with the amount people ALREADY pay, NWSL could do this and not lose.

They could start tomorrow

Did I say? It’s happening, time to move $ into the sport not into ECNL executive salaries.

This is 100% the reason. They want the US to dominate the world in soccer, and right now we are getting our butts kicked (men's) or being passed (women's).

Second, on the boys side there are people looking for pathway to the pros. Not so in any real sense on the girls side. If this were true you might see some move but ECNL will then become the college vehicle and will still get most of the girls. There is really nothing GA can do in the short term that improves its position. Clubs value the girls side over the boys side

I think you are underestimating the delusion of parents and kids. If GA is successful in establishing (or being perceived as having established) a "pathway to the pros" the better girls will migrate there from ECNL and it will become a viable (and in time, primary) pathway to college soccer for girls.

Maybe but I doubt it. The girls side is focused on college. Some girls are leaving for the pros but the best girls are still going to college.

DA kicked ECNLs butt. But ECNL is still here better than before. The US pro teams- male or female - cannot be relied on long term. Maybe you can make an argument for the MLS which seems to be having a great run with no end in sight. But not on the women's side.

Maybe over time/

The women need to have league minimium salaries that players can afford to live on before they think about subsidizing youth programs

No they don't. All NWSL has to do is ring the dinner bell and parents will come running.

If you mean pay to play, sure. NWSL could make a lot of money having academies that cost obscene amounts of money and lead nowhere

Most of MLS Next is pay to play.

Only the Acadamies are free.

Only the academies are owned by teams an only the academies are a path to the pros

Correct but where do you think the Acadamies recruit talent from?

Ding ding ding the MLSn non Academy teams that they play against.

If you think MLS Club Academies only get players from MLS Next teams, you're not very knowledgeable on the topic.
The data and facts dispute your argument.

But nobody cares about international soccer. They're perfectly content with how soccer is played in college.
