Can someone explain BRF last names? I’m so confused.

The surname is their highest ranking title.

For the children it’s actually their style derived from their father’s highest title. But I can’t face explaining style v title. It would require day drinking.

Haha.. yes. I delved into it a while ago, and decided I wasn't that interested.

Yes. But once Charles dies, William can strip her and her children of all of their titles and honors.

She will become Dowager Queen Camilla. That is the title given to the spouses of deceased kings. Queen Elizabeth’s mother was called the Queen Mother because she was the mother of the monarch and it also avoided confusion because they shared the same first name. Camilla is not William’s mother so she must be Dowager Queen Camilla.

More likely, Camilla, the Queen Dowager

Once again, the last time this was used was for Queen Adelaide in… 1837

Not Queen Mary. Not Queen Alexandra. Not Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

Camilla as a stepmother is not like the others.

I’m not surprised Harry kept his family name. His “estrangement” with his family isn’t extensive enough that he’d actually adopt a new surname. Some people do, but it’s when their family of origin has REAL problems. (I’m not discounting Harry’s legitimate grievances, it must’ve sucked to grow up as a “spare”, but c’mon, it’s nothing compared to the physical, emotional and sexual terror some kids grow up in).

As for giving his kids “prince” and “princess” titles, I would’ve had mad respect for H&M if they had rejected the titles. Put their money where their mouth is. But I get it. Being able to give your kids those titles is unique, special. Makes their kids more important than other people. And deep down Harry and Meghan love the idea of being special and better than everyone else.

On the birth certificates of his kids Harry was Duke of Sussex as last name, not Mountbatten-Windsor. So now the kids will go by Sussex, the way William’s kids go by Cambridge now with his new title.

William’s kids now go by Wales after William became Prince of Wales.

No, he was Prince of Wales and became Duke of Cambridge upon his wedding. Same with Harry, first Prince of Wales and then Duke of Sussex.

William became Prince of Wales when the Queen died in 2022. He was given the title Duke of Cambridge after his wedding in 2012, and his children were enrolled in school with the last name Cambridge. Now that he has a “higher level” title than Duke of Cambridge, they will be George/Charlotte/Louis Wales, just like William and Harry were known as William Wales and Harry Wales in college and the military. I believe on the children’s birth certificates both William and Kate didn’t even use a last name.

To;dr, their “family name” is Mountbatten-Windsor (really, it’s just Windsor), but informally their last name is their title or their father’s.

No! He grew up Prince of Wales.

No, I think he was the Duke of Earl.

Camilla as a stepmother is not like the others.

Her title and style derive from her status as the wife of the King, and presuming she outlives him, her title and style will derive from being the widow of the King. It has nothing to do with her being William’s stepmother. She will simply be HM Queen Camilla

I don’t care for her and think they should have kept the promise that she would be Princess Consort, but oh well.

Yes, adopting M-W surname was the attempt to shed the bad associations.

Sussex is a title and not a name though, so it's a very odd thing to do in America since he had a choice to just use Mountbatten-Windsor.
