NP here. The civic minded thing to do is to shovel your sidewalk. I had to go shovel my elderly mom’s walk because I would feel terrible leaving it unshoveled. Once the snow goes through a few thaw-melt-freeze cycles walking in boots won’t help. It’ll be an uneven, icy mess.

Maybe there’s no law but it’s what good people do. And if you have a disability or are 80 years old, hire someone!

In most neighborhoods, a neighbor or two will just do it for an elderly or disabled person. Unasked. Shoveling a walking path on the sidewalk so that the elderly, the dog walkers, kids, runners, walkers, the mail man, the delivery person doesn't slip is not a big deal.

The unkindness and selfishness of so many in the DC area no longer surprises me. As evidenced on the board. But many, many will help out an elderly neighbor.

But the 30 year old not shoveling in front of his house? The entire neighborhood will regard him as an a##hole forever. Just the way it is.

My kids have better things to do than shovel for a bunch of whiny complainers. Walking in snow is not difficult.

+1. Just don’t worry about it! That happened everywhere! I think I’m the only person on the block that shoveled my sidewalk. The rest of the block to the stop sign has 6 inches of snow untouched.

And, what’s the practical impact?

Do people walk down the sidewalk with any regularity? (Dog walkers don’t count since they could easily walk their dog on their own property.)

I'm on a busy street and the sidewalk is heavily used by walkers. If I don't get there first, the walkers turn it into solid ice. I did shovel and now it's completely clear and dry.

Wrong. I’m solidly a Millennial and the sheer selfishness and laziness of able bodied people who won’t shovel is astounding. Unfortunately, I discovered my husband is one of them and tbh I’ve lost some respect for him. I’d do it, but I’m 4 months pregnant. I ended up just hiring a neighborhood teen.

Why is shoveling so important to you? You must understand that people who walk outside after it snows should expect to walk in the snow. Let them wear appropriate footwear and don’t give it another thought. This seems like an issue that you may want to explore for yourself.
