How do I tell my 30 year old neighbor to shovel his side of the street. He is 30 year old and he is very healthy but wont shovel what can we do?

Not all disabilities are visible

Not OP but there’s a house like this on our street—we see them out all summer doing yard work, other strenuous activities, playing with kids, but come winter they only shovel the strip to back their SUV out of the driveway.

Their elderly neighbors get out and shovel but these folks are just entitled.

Reported them last winter after I fell walking the dog (no sidewalk on the other side of the street) and code enforcement ticketed them.

Is this Maryland (Moco), DC, or VA?

You do nothing. Shocking I know but you cannot control others.

Or you can come on DCUM and complain.

Safer to walk on snow than ice.

Many people can’t shovel for health reasons.

If sidewalks on main commuter streets with bus stops aren’t being shoveled, why risk your health to shovel a sidewalk in neighborhoods where most people commute by car rather than walk?

If you commute by foot, then you should have legit snow boots.

Many people do not know it’s the law! Check laws in your jurisdiction then tell him.

Go shovel it yourself…and make a big scene by huffing and puffing and periodically screaming, “Oy vey! My back! My heart! This shoveling is going to kill me!”

Shame is a tool.

If you want to go above and beyond: shovel the snow into a big pile that spills into wherever he parks his car.

Bottom line: have some fun with it, op!

Our neighbors either. One is mid-30’s staying at her parents house. Spoiled and doesn’t know any better. Another is a family of four, parents are in their late 40’s, kids in their tweens. They are fat and lazy. Is that considered a disability these days?

Come out to Fairfax County. Half of the sidewalks in our neighborhood are never shoveled. I wouldn’t think anything of this. I didn’t know it was the law to shovel a sidewalk anywhere.

It will be in the 50s and rain next week. It will be melted then.

I don’t shovel. I also don’t care. I’m fully capable of doing it. Shame away. IDGAF

+1. Just don’t worry about it! That happened everywhere! I think I’m the only person on the block that shoveled my sidewalk. The rest of the block to the stop sign has 6 inches of snow untouched.

And, what’s the practical impact?

Do people walk down the sidewalk with any regularity? (Dog walkers don’t count since they could easily walk their dog on their own property.)

Many people couldn’t shovel yesterday when it was coming down because it was still a work day for many!

Yes!! Why do people not understand this!
