What is the school like? He did not shoot someone in Alexandria, but in DC.

Why the backpack? What was he really doing there? Besides not backing down from a fight.

That's a good question. A suburban kid walking around DC in the middle of the night is unusual enough, carrying a large backpack (with guns) is definitely strange.

Unless the LE parent told or encouraged them to carry for protection in DC.

His late grandfather was LE, not a parent, and the theory is unlikely to say the least.

West Potomac was not a great school when I graduated from there 30 years ago. Heck we had gang related drive by incidents then. I remember when they had to ban belts with metal studs because people were using them as weapons during fights. And then they had to ban excessively baggy pants because people could conceal weapons in them. On the flip side of that, several senators’ kids went there.

Anyway, it’s definitely gone more down hill since then. That Rt 1 corridor is even more a hotbed of gang activity.

I certainly was not expecting to see the suspect in this was from the neighborhood he was from and not the Rt 1 corridor area.

Are the parents former-military or active? Is a parent deployed which explains the lack of supervision and awareness by adults?

What HS did the other suspects attend? It sounded like MPD visited two different high schools.

oh, I definitely think DC MPD delayed too long, and WP didn't want him in school. I also think MPD is trying to deflect and throw some shade at FCPS (or FCPD) for alerting the kid. I would not be surprised if a source in the MPD told someone in the media to look at the grandfather - so it's never explicitly stated but MPD got the word out. I don't think an enterprising DCUM person was the source of the grandfather info, but it's nothing provable.

I dare say this is the only reasonable statement in this entire thread. If anyone doubts systematic racism or the different ways we treat children of differnt races, they are blind.

Why was the kid outside at 3am with a gun? There is no excuse for that. I have a DC teen. You bet your bottom dollar i know where they are and whose house they are at. And if i dont trust the friend's parents, they won't go.

I love how everyone is forgiving the parents. If your kid sneaks out at night, set up cameras. Alarm the door. Find drugs in his room, get him help. This family is well resources. But lots of people on this list will find escuses for this family and this blonde teen thanks to his lack of melinated skin.

I don’t see this at all. All these families screwed up miserably to have kids out there committing crimes and being reckless in the wee hours. So many parents are checked out and blame others. On the car accident thread, we had so many people forgiving the parents because they were poor or Hispanic - so many saying the families couldn’t be responsible and it was society’s fault. As a child of immigrants, it was disgusting to see such low standards just because a family was new to the country. Personal responsibility has left the building.

Well as a DC resident, I think the lack of attention is completely in line with how every shooting death is a blip on the horizon now, barely reported unless there is something truly noteworthy like it was a small child or in an unusual place. This was a shooting after some kind of beef on U st at 3am. Unfortunately a fairly regular occurrence and most people’s reaction is “Well I don’t hang out on U st at 3am so does not impact me.” Sadly if the shooter were black this would get even LESS coverage than it has.
