Which schools are becoming more popular? Any surprises?

NP. Same for my DS, now a sophomore at Vanderbilt. He also couldn't be persuaded to throw his hat in the ring for places like Columbia or Yale -- he definitely had the resume to buy an Ivy lotto ticket -- because he wanted no more part of the progressive thought police that he had endured for the last decade in DC.

Why the FOUR eye-rolleys? Is there something wrong with the PP? Should everyone aspire to Colby

They were a response to the poster stating that their DS turned down Ivies that he totally could've gotten into because of "progressive thought police". If he wanted to go to a southern school so he can be racist and homophobic without consequences, he should just say that.

+1

Exactly.

Tennessee. Like people are crawling over each other to get to that state.

Where have you been the last few years? Please take note (other than NH & Maine, which got a lot of WFH residents from other NE states during Covid, the NE is grim):

You know there are tons of smart, well educated, open minded, NON racist and NON homophobic people all over the south, right? Even more to the point, universities are filled with these kinds of people in every corner of the country, including the south and southeast.

Schools like Rice and UT Austin are very liberal and in urban democratic counties.

I think kids want to get out of echo chambers and try to see different perspectives.

There are tons of kids that feel they want to get away from activism the pervades their life in the DMV. My 3 DCs were so exhausted by the classmates at their Big3 private that came across, frankly, as close minded and judgemental. Similar to the people on here who say their kids would never consider attending college in a state with restrictive abortion laws, there are tons of kids that want to get away from this close minded thinking. My kids are all pro-choice, but don’t need everything to be an argument or a statement. All 3 landed in southern states for college where life is happy and the sun shines.

Sounds like a gaggle of fascists raised by trash.

This year's applicants from the DMV were the ones mostly indoors and online for all of 9th grade. Makes sense they still have some scarring and want to be somewhere with at least decent weather in case it happens again. And as parents, we often want what our kids want (for them).

Then add people migrating south, at least to Carolinas for example. If you lived in MA and moved to NC, that likely has an affect on your college kids' searches.

Plus, a lot of the state flagships in the south/west are pretty good. Like my example above, if some family moved south to VA, NC, GA for example, that is a lot of good colleges for lower prices.

I've anecdotally heard more UGA, GA Tech, UVA, UNC, Alabama, Emory, and out west Arizona, Boulder, UT-Austin, UDenver among others.

Texas and Florida
, and the South in general, are growing population because Boomers are retiring. That has nothing to do with K-12 schools or colleges.

To PP, don't underestimate older folks moves impacting their adult kids. Unless you are physically tied to a job in the NE, it might have appeal, especially if your babysitters are moving.

Also though a small portion of the population, consider generational wealth. "We have some money that will help you with a down payment. Come on down."

Fair enough. But there is also such a thing as sickofallthisbullshit. Not sure if that's a word. There are a lot of people that want a good education AND have the space to figure things out in a dynamic space. And that is not happening in most New England colleges.

This is not a Trump thing. Everyone hates Trump. But no one wants to spend four years walking on eggshells.

Schools in the South, Midwest. and - sometimes - the West, are far freer than the poor-weather, ideological rabbit-holes of the Northeast. And applications reflect that.

Seriously? He will be Republican nominee for POTUS. Who just chose the Speaker of the House. Someone likes him. Actually, a lot of someone’s. And based on the “never vote for another Woke liberal” posters on this thread and this board, you will vote his criminal, indicted, insurrectionist a** in the next election. We’re back to Butter emails! Except now it’s But Woke!

You say you don’t like Trump. But you voted for him before and will vote for him again. Without you, there would be no Trump. Be honest about the fact that the Butter Emails! Murderers and Rapists! Trans Panic! Woke! rhetoric you spread created him and enables him. You own him.

My kid’s first choice is a school in MA. It is a small Liberal arts college well known for diversity and gives a lot of aid. It is also well known for being a good place for ND kids. It is on a commuter train line to Boston - we wandered around Boston a little before and after our visit as we took Amtrak into the city and then the commuter line to the college.

I didn’t get a “we’re all the same” or “we’re unhappy” vibe at all. The kids we met and saw were all happy and smiling, even though it was overcast while we visited. I also didn’t get a gulag vibe, whatever that may be. They seemed happy with their diversity and acceptance of others.

But it isn’t at the top of the lists so worshipped here, so none of you have ever thought of or looked there.

Goodness. I’ve never voted Republican in my life but I can see why kids would be fleeing away from your crowd at schools.

I’m the PP that was called a fascist raising trash because my kids chose to go to school in the south. I am a liberal Democrat that has never voted Republican in my life. My kids are also all liberal Democrats. This sort of anger, assumption and aggression is what turns people off, don’t you get it? You can be passionate about your causes while still being kind, respectful and HAPPY.

I don’t think the PP possesses the ability to be happy. Neither does the one who called you a fascist raising trash because your kids go to school in the south.

These are the kinds of people kids are fleeing these days. That level of discourse may have taken over the northeastern schools, but it hasn’t infected everything.

The schools that are increasing in popularity these days have one thing in common: happier, more grounded student bodies. That is an increasingly large draw.

I agree, but it hurtful and cruel. I know it is just anonymous BS, but these vitriol stings. I guess that is the point.

Try not to let it bother you. The PP is obviously nuts. I’m glad your kids are doing well and I hope they are having a wonderful time at their schools in the south.
