Which schools are becoming more popular? Any surprises?

Seems a lot of trolling mixed in here. Is someone trying to deter applicants from NE schools, or is it the right wing propaganda poster(s) again? I get so tired of the railing against this stereotype of "wokeness."

There are tons of kids that feel they want to get away from activism the pervades their life in the DMV. My 3 DCs were so exhausted by the classmates at their Big3 private that came across, frankly, as close minded and judgemental. Similar to the people on here who say their kids would never consider attending college in a state with restrictive abortion laws, there are tons of kids that want to get away from this close minded thinking. My kids are all pro-choice, but don’t need everything to be an argument or a statement. All 3 landed in southern states for college where life is happy and the sun shines.

NP. Same for my DS, now a sophomore at Vanderbilt. He also couldn't be persuaded to throw his hat in the ring for places like Columbia or Yale -- he definitely had the resume to buy an Ivy lotto ticket -- because he wanted no more part of the progressive thought police that he had endured for the last decade in DC.

I'm sure Ted Cruz (Princeton/Harvard), Tom Cotton (Harvard/Harvard), and Josh Hawley (Stanford/Yale) would agree with you.

LMAO. It is kinda funny that these uber Ivy educated politicians can convince families to not pursue the exceedingly valuable education that they themselves received. Y'all are definitely suckers.

Last two years, yes. This year it’s really dropping off a lot of lists at our HS/neighborhood. Due to housing issues and ratings games.[/quote]

+1. Finally people are figuring out what NE has been doing

Very intelligent behavior. YOu are at college to learn, not to be indoctrinated

Why the FOUR eye-rolleys? Is there something wrong with the PP? Should everyone aspire to Colby

They were a response to the poster stating that their DS turned down Ivies that he totally could've gotten into because of "progressive thought police". If he wanted to go to a southern school so he can be racist and homophobic without consequences, he should just say that.

That's not the other option and you know it. Smart people are avoiding the woke schools. This too will pass and you will have a "woke" education - which no employer wants.

Where are they saying that? Precisely where

If only kids were actually living at that urban campus all 4 years…

Yeah and not in Oakland or at some tiny London campus.

My son's BFF spent a miserable freshman year in Oakland. No thanks.

The schools in New England would become more popular if they stopped being such utterly grim places. They have become completely exhausting educational factories where the administrators have issued kill-on-sight orders for anything approaching “fun,” and the academic discourse has turned into an ideological gulag.

Very much this. I went to college in New England. Neither of my kids - boys - had any interested at all in going to school in New England. Grim ideological gulags is exactly right. It had no appeal to them at all. They both go to school in the South now. And are very happy.

+100 to both PPs

Right, because we all know the Ivies and other prestigious schools haven't fallen off the LWNJ cliff in recent years - nope, not at all!

You know there are tons of smart, well educated, open minded, NON racist and NON homophobic people all over the south, right? Even more to the point, universities are filled with these kinds of people in every corner of the country, including the south and southeast.

DP. You can be kind and inclusive of all without being constantly lectured to or yelled at. That's the part you seem to have (grossly) missed.

The phrase “wokeness” is derailing, but the fact remains that a lot of NE schools have become unaccountably grim places where one can never debase oneself enough to satisfy the indentitarian mafias running the places.

The Southern and Western schools have become popular for many reasons, but a big one is simple: they are happier, more fun places. That’s it. A lot of kids aren’t complicated: they want a good education where they will have a good experience and have some fun. That isn’t the northeast for the most part any more. You will get a good education at NE schools, but it will be a plodding trudge with classrooms full of Tracy Flicks the entire time.

Anyone who uses the term wokeness just wants you to know they watch Fox news without saying it outright.

The topic of the thread is not Ron DeSantis’ crusade against wokeness. It is college app trends. As some privates are now approaching $100k per year, more kids are applying to large publics OOS that wouldn’t be considered before. Some in the south, some not.

Also, hearing more kids considering “regional” publics both in their own state and even OOS. These used to be for B/C students but now attract serious students because the flagships are getting more competitive and full of OOSers. For example, UMBC used to be considered a commuter school but a lot of smart kids cant get into UMCP so now go there and live on campus. Even surprised to see kids applying there OOS.

We are sticking with Jesuit universities with all the crap going on in the past 5 years.

+1

It’s also why we pulled our kids out of public and sent them to a Jesuit high school.
