If you were a short child, did you end up becoming a short adult?

I was always small and ended up being 5'3" which is very short in my family. My mom agonized over my height when I was younger because "only tall women can really be beautiful".
As children, my sister was always tall and my cousin was always short. Both of them ended up between 5'9" and 5'10" since my sister got her period at 11 and cousin at 16.

I was always one of the shortest boys until 11th grade. I started 11th grade at 16 yo and 5'2". I ended 11th grade at 17 yo and 5'8". I grew 6 inches. When I was growing up, my mother would buy long jeans for me and then tuck in a baste the bottoms, then, as I grew, she would let out the legs so they would last longer. That year, I had four lines on my pants by the end of the school year. My mother said she didn't want to buy another pair until I stopped growing.

I ended up the average American male height, 5'9".

My parents are short, so I am short. Dh's father family side have tall gene, and many of them are taller than 6'. Even though MIL is short, both DH and sibling are tall.
I hope DH's tall gene will determine our children's height.

No. I was the shortest girl in elementary/middle school even though both of my parents are 5’8. I had a late puberty and ended up 5’5 which I consider average.

I was among the shortest in elementary school, average in middle school and back to be on the shorter end of average in highschool. I am 5’3” which is pretty average in Southern Europe where I grew up.

I definitely feel short in the US. I used to always wear heels and try to look taller… however, American men loved my size and shape (more than the European) and as an adult I am fine with my size 5’3” and 120 lbs.

For a long time I still thought of myself as short, though, and it was only after numerous people told me as an adult that I was weird for saying I was short, that I eventually figured out that I wasn't. It was just hard to shake this identity that had been deeply engrained in me as who I am throughout my childhood. Even in HS, people referred to me a short or little, even though by then I now realize I was probably approaching average and actually had friends who were shorter than I was for the first time. I'm not sure why my growth spurts just kind of went unnoticed. Maybe they were too gradual.

Same- my parents were told that I would be 5’ at the most, but I’m 5’5” as an adult. I had a late period, which helped. I think I was just under 5 ft when I was in 8th grade.

I was always first or second in size place. Now I'm 5'2. Stayed short.

It's not unless you think facts are optional.

It's because it doesn't take genetic background into consideration and that’s what people are comparing themselves against. I'm 5'4. For every country of my heritage (white, Northern European) the average height is 5'6 to 5'7, so 5'4 is short. Sure, the average female height in Nicaragua is 5'1, so maybe 5'4 is tall! But people compare themselves most directly to people who look like them. The US is extremely heterogenous so you get a lot of extremes that play into that average but it might feel like that doesn't apply to you. It goes in both directions.

wtf. This is the US, so people compare themselves to those they see around them every day, which includes people of all races. Unless you are a racist who only hangs out with other people from Northern Europe.

No, but it turns out that I’m not — and probably wasn’t— actually short. I was one of the shortest girls in my neighborhood group of friends, always near the front of the line in classes when we lined up according to height, and noticeably the shortest one in my entire family. It took years for me to realize that at 5’ 7” inches, I’m actually on the tall side for a woman, although I’m still one of the shortest in my group of close friends.

Always short. Still short, and getting shorter. Both of my parents were short, too.

Under 5 feet.

It should come as no surprise that I was always the shortest kid in my class.

Frankly, it doesn’t bother me.

How do you know I see people of all races every day? This isn’t the United Nations. I might live in a rural predominantly white town or in mainly Asian neighborhood.

I've known my DH since 7th grade. I was shortest girl in class my whole life and he the shortest boy.

I grew to 5'2" and he to 5'8". But he is also the most gorgeous man I have ever seen in person , and I see the looks that women give him. Our children are short and gorgeous.
