. At least one kid is in the hospital. There should be jail time for this.

Agree but it's very unlikely. All the laws and policies have been changed re: juveniles. A lot of specialized schools/centers for violent teens have been closed.

If the kid in the hospital dies and assailant is 18, maybe CJS consequences. Otherwise, likely RJ.

What does RJ look like in MoCo schools? Per WP:

That our schools and streets have no consequences for violent people is our fault. We voted for this.

Coaches can step in as well. Every kid who was involved should be removed from the team.

I can confirm the boys on the ground are both WJ students. The girls getting jumped were both BCC (mistaken as WJ). The joint statement from the principals of these schools is complete bull$hit. This was not a gathering that turned violent. This was a mob of BCC kids hunting down WJ kids while wearing ski masks. I can also confirm that there was indeed a weapon present. All have been treated for bruises and cuts. There was a separate incident where a WJ student was attacked and ended up in the hospital after being attacked with a weapon. He sustained head injuries and a broken nose. Please stop calling this a fight or brawl. These kids were attacked. I hope those who perpetrated this are prosecuted.

This is very sad to see. I have known kids from both these communities for many years. There is no excuse for this kind of malicious violence, none. There need to be appropriate consequences.
At the same time, I do think we need to ask why these kids are so angry. There is an enormous range of wealth within these schools, particularly BCC, how does that affect some of these at risk youth? How can we, as a community, being to address this?

I errantly assumed the attackers are on the football team. Maybe not.

I’m really wondering what started it, but that kid in the black hoodie is awful and should be expelled from school and probably in juvenile detention. I hope someone turns him in. Anyone have any idea if the kid who was attacked was from WJ or BCC?

The metro is not far from the school, at all.

Since the kid being kicked looks like he’s wearing black I’m going to guess he’s from WJ.

You can confirm this, how?

I’m actually shocked they scheduled this as the first game of the year, during the first week of school knowing their history.

With that being said this is not Mcps’ problem to fix. Not at a school event or on property. The community needs to fix it.

This is not new, and in fact is why they have so many rules surrounding attendance at games. It's hard to understand why MCPS didn't work with county police to ensure a police presence in downtown Bethesda as they have on at least some previous occasions. To those who think the metro is far away, it's not -- it's on the way to where many kids go out after the games AND it's the way that lots of kids who either metro'd or took a bus into Bethesda get home.

This was 2021's letter:

Dear Members of the Walter Johnson High School and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Communities,

This is a joint message from the principals of Walter Johnson High School and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High Schools.

We wanted to let our communities know that several serious incidents occurred after the playoff football game on Friday, November 5, between our two schools at the B-CC campus.

Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School Students taunted Walter Johnson High School students and vandalized the bus transporting Walter Johnson players as they attempted to return to their home campus. Following this, there were reports of an altercation involving multiple students in downtown Bethesda.

While both schools had many administrators, security and police present on campus before, during, and after the game, it is essential to know that these events happened off-campus. The Montgomery County Police Department was engaged immediately and responded and are investigating these incidents.

The alleged behaviors are alarming and unacceptable and not aligned with either school’s guidelines for responsible behavior. Student safety is of paramount importance and we expect all students to represent the highest examples of proper behavior as representatives of our individual school communities. We can be athletic rivals safely and respectfully.

The administration at both schools will be working collaboratively in the coming days to repair the harm done and work towards understanding and unifying our communities following these incidents.

While we work at the school level to educate about these actions, we are also requesting that parents speak to their children about their individual and collective role as responsible citizens in participating in a fun, safe, and enjoyable manner.

Sincerely,

Shelton Mooney
Principal, Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School

Jennifer Baker
Principal, Walter Johnson High School

The bcc team was in the locker room when this fight broke out. The wj team was on the bus home.

You misunderstand what happened, with who and where.

+1 For sure, otherwise they'll never learn to take responsibility for their violent behavior.

People like you are the problem. This is not an mcps or coach issue. This is a supervision issue of mcps property after the game. It’s a parenting and police issue. Kids should be charged as adults for assault.

So the black girls from bcc beating the white girl thought they were brutalizing a wj student but it was their classmate?

This has nothing to do with coaches. Game was over and kids were not in coaches supervision.
