Literally the only reason they want to rescind DC home rule is to hamstring DC's ability to do anything for itself so the House GOP can neglect DC, make DC worse, then point to DC and say "see, look at these urban liberal hellholes!"

All they have to do is point to any other major city in the US. Don’t need DC to illustrate how awful Democratic policies are.

Yeah, the economic powerhouses of our nation are so awful. All those sky-high property values are so awful. You know why you can't point to any Republican run cities that are crime-free utopias? Because the educated people live in cities and know that while Democratic policies may not be perfect, Republican policies are even worse.

Imagine how ignorant you'd have to be to look at decades of failed Republican policies - handouts to the rich, denying healthcare, denying bodily autonomy, killing jobs, screwing the poor, racking up debt, and believing THAT is what's going to improve things in our cities.

Love it. A liberal referencing “bodily autonomy” - would bet anything she was for vaccine mandates.

And for closing public schools. And against charters and vouchers.

Im a new poster. I believe— i hope— there are more moderate Dems living in DC than this board would have you believe. I live in a neighborhood that was rapidly improving until the pandemic. I was not for defunding the police, but i did join the march for Black lives. I got vaccinated but was not keen on mandates. I took my damn mask off as soon as Biden did, which was much earlier than the rest of DC. I am pro public schools and not a fan of the charter/school choice movement, and was always adamant that school closures should be short, and that they would hurt vulnerable kids.

Crime has been off the hook. I see chaos from my front stoop, where I witnessed and disrupted a carjacking (unarmed) in progress. I do blame Charles Allen and Brianne Nadeau for a lot. That crime bill was a joke. Thank God Biden vetoed it. And yet, i have been for DC statehood. My kids are born here. Ive lived here 20 years. We deserve to have real representation in congress.

Oh, have they gone and stood on the heads of the authorities in charge of Union Station? How about stand in front of it until someone who is in charge does something? Aren't they supposed to represent the good of the people of DC? If not, have at it Congressional takeover.
I remember when US was a nice place. I met a friend there two weeks ago who wanted to buy some of the amazing canolis to take back to NY (remember those?). I do. We went downstairs to see if the Italian bakery was still there. Of course, pretty much all the food venues are now closed in this depressing wreck. Lasting peace. Fat chance. They can't even keep a food court solvent.

It was to eat on the train-ride home, and was a well known Canoli stop for folks who pass thru Union Station. Union Station used to be a fun little place to meet up even if you weren't taking the train. If you are not aware that Union Station used to be a place that people used to frequent on purpose just for the food and shopping, you probably shouldn't be commenting.

I doubt it would work that way, but maybe with oversight they would ask why the city is currently doing so little and allocate more resources to rat control? It's kind of embarrassing when that night vision clip of rats frolicking by the thousands in Lafayette Park gets run. Seems like our current overseers aren't too concerned.

They do, and if union station was an actual issue to dc residents and not a right wing dystopian talking point, they'd probably spend more effort on it.

Actually, DC Justice Lab talking points aside, the fact is that DC is an outlier with its soaring homicide rate. Dropping in all other major cities. Even Baltimore is on a downward trajectory.

I wish someone could get a functional 911 call center for a start, it has led to dead people and this week, dead dogs. The problems are well known but never fixed.

A functional and certified crime lab would certainly help the prosecution rate. It has repeatedly lost certification and has repeatedly missed deadlines for reapplication.

Why is the unacceptable state of the most basic of govt services, underpinning public safety, allowed to continue, year after year? I've been here since the early 90s and after a real upswing in the 00s, DC is sliding back. It's not just crime and the above, DCPS quality is slipping, too.

Isn't the DC crime lab basically outsourced to private and federal government labs? So how would giving DC over to the feds improve that? They are already a part of the problem. The GOP doesn't really care about DC crime. They want to take over DC elections. Power is all they care about.

Your petty complaints about carjackings and package thefts will be held hostage in order to pass their bill banning abortions. Because, #priorities. And oh, by the way they will also hold budgets hostage and default on city debts if it doesn't get passed.
