So you were wrong I guess? |
Well, infanticide is illegal everywhere and isn’t on the ballet in Ohio or anywhere. |
Republicans have been campaigning against killing babies as they're about to come out of the mother (which wasn't happening.) Then they legislate against terminating blastocysts, zygotes, and embryos which isn't the sort of human life anyone actually cares about when they think of "babies." |
Abortion is “the dog that caught the car” issue for Republicans. They caught the car and overturned Roe. Now they have no idea what to do and they further can’t campaign on finally being able to catch that car. Oops. |
It's worse than that. They've programmed their voters to be absolutists on this issue because it was never a reality until now. They've gerrymandered the heck out of their districts and therefore, are terrified of primary challenges in most cases. They'll have to come out unequivocally for an abortion ban, which will kill their chances with moderates and independents in the general. Their base is too big for the primary and too small for the general in many, many parts of the country. I don't envy the political consultant that has to navigate this minefield or walk back everything that has been said to date (and before it had real life consequences for voters). |
Yep, they lost it as a GOTV issue (the carrot they perpetually held out there) and gave it to the Democrats and Independents and potentially lost some of the most moderate Republican votes. And they know it. The damage is irreparable which is why they’re turning to authoritarianism. |
+1 this |
Wah wah. What did they think was going to happen? These hardcore Republicans are generally older, past reproductive age, and whipped into a frenzy about abortion. I mean the party can pivot to some other frenzy (probably trans people) but Roe is still overturned and now the Democrats get to use it as a “whip the voters into a frenzy” issue. I guess it doesn’t matter too much when the point of all that gerrymandering was economic stuff anyway aka funneling more money into big corporations and the .01% … but still. |
Once more: If they were so gerrymandered, why did they choose a GOP governor? Why did they choose a GOP Senator in their last Senatorial election? |
I think PP went over your head. |
It’s clear the public is on democrats side on the issue. Pro-choice wins whenever it’s on the ballot even in red states. The trick is translating that into candidate elections. When people vote for candidates, they are thinking about many issues and abortion is just one. |
Did you not understand that the PP was speaking to U.S. elections generally? It's not specific to Ohio. Also, it's going to be dependent on how absolutist (or moderate) the GOP pushes going forward. The attack ads write themselves, especially for any GOP Rep or Senator candidate that is trying to win out of a bruising primary. |
You would think rhetoric along the lines of "this is an issue of freedom for a woman and mother, it is between her and her medical practitioner, not the state" would resonate with non-evangelical libertarians. |
NextDoor neighbors were posting about all of the same lies we see here on this forum ie: “Partial birth abortion” “abortion on demand!”abortion up until the due date for healthy babies” that was all expected The new ones were: “ minors will get sex change operations without parental consent” And I was seeing commercials for that specific talking point- so I know where they got it. Also “ they are silencing the 44 smallest counties! There voices are just as important as the ( implied evil) cities. * the current process the republicans sought to change required 5% of the last gubernatorial election over any 44 counties to make to ballot with a cure process of 10 days. That’s been the process for over a century. |
Abortion is just one huuuuuuge issue. It is dominant. These suburban mom voters that are always talked about will not tolerate this fundamental right being taken away form their children. I don't think the GOP understand how frustrating it is for the voters to watch the clock turned backwards on their daughters. They will fight back. Clearly. |
