Seriously! I spent my childhood summers in the Mediterranean and I have no problems whatsoever with Rehoboth or any of the other nearby beaches. The ocean, the dunes, the boardwalks are all gorgeous and you can find good food and drinks fairly easily. No one is forcing you into the souvenir stores or fast food joints! |
| The only beach I would do within driving is Ocean City NJ and if I stayed in a house right close on or by beach which my family do. Otherwise I would fly to an actual awesome beach scene or better, a beach with things to do like PR, DR, St Lucia, Mexico, BVI or Costa Rica. I have zero interest in OBX Rehoboth etc. If I was really cashed strapped I suppose I would have no choice but otherwise no way. It's not like it's cheap in these places other than the flight fares. |

This whole Rehoboth thing confuses me to no end. I moved to the DMV area as a young adult and have lived here for 20 years. We have never been even one time. There is no global appeal; I can always find a vacation spot more exciting. Napa, Santa Monica, Key West, Punta Cana, Hawaii, Fiji, Cairns, Maldives, etc….
From my perspective, it seems to appeal to people that are either too poor to travel to world-class destinations or used to be that poor when they were younger and are still returning for nostalgic reasons. Maybe it’s a day-trip thing? |
It confuses you to no end that most people cannot afford trips to Fiji? Ok. |
I can fly to Miami in about 2½ hours and the beach options are infinitely superior. They have equally good pizza, French fries, and ice cream. But they also sport some excellent Cuban food and a dozen Michelin starred restaurant options. Plus the weather is nice and there is no shortage of great lodging options. Is there a new Michelin 3-Star or recently opened Four Seasons in Rehoboth or something? Explain it to me like I’m a kindergartener. |
Some people are what grownups call insufferable— it means they are ‘t very nice and we don’t like to talk to them. Try not to be one of those people |
| I enjoyed our trip to Rehoboth and think it’s a cute little town. But I have family in FL and realized we can just fly there and stay with them for cheaper than a trip to Rehoboth. |
You’ve never been but don’t get the appeal? |
Here’s what you are missing: Dc metro locals have beach houses at the local beaches. We grew up going to these beaches, so we go every year. But we also travel elsewhere. ICYMI: people with beach houses have money and travel to other nice places…like, all the time. |
This. If it were the only vacation of the year, I’d go elsewhere. But we go elsewhere for winter break, Spring break, long weekends in winter. During summer we go back and forth to OC to the house and then usually go someplace farther away in summer as well. |
Exactly. We have a house near Rehoboth and we enjoy going there in the summer. But we also travel to Europe, Caribbean, Asia, Africa, etc. We can afford to do all the above. |
Okay! I stand informed. It’s the beach house factor. Sort of like owning a lake cabin in the Catskills or Adirondacks while living in Manhattan and making casual weekend trips out for fun. |
| We've always had second houses on DelMarVa. However we also have houses in other countries so *shrugs* |
|
I don’t have a house in Rehoboth and still love it. I’ve been going most summers throughout my life and it just makes me happy.
It’s walkable, you can find places on the beach that aren’t too crowded, and there are a few very good restaurants downtown. But if you don’t like it, that’s cool too. I don’t think it’s hurting for business. |
+1. We use our house in Bethany as more of a weekend getaway 9 months out of the year and it’s great. For actual beach vacations, I prefer Carribean |
