Rehoboth - what’s the appeal?

Anonymous
You all are a bunch of snobs. Drive two and half hours to beach. Hang out on the beach. Hit the boardwalk and get some pizza, french fries, and ice cream. Go to the arcade. Go back to the beach. Repeat until exhausted and drive home. If you can't enjoy that, I feel sorry for you.

There is no public beach access. There is also no public parking at beach and beach is a no standing zone.

There is your solution. No one has balls to do it.

Are you about inclusiveness everywhere else?

We arrived on late afternoon on Saturday, and the crowds were beyond crazy. We’ve been going on and off for over 25 years, and Ive never seen it like that. Thankfully it dropped off dramatically on Sunday. But even the trip home on a Tuesday afternoon on Rte 1 was filled with traffic.

As for the beach, we’ve always gone to the beach at Gordon’s Pond. It’s so much nicer.

My spouse has tossed out the idea of maybe retiring there. Financially it makes sense. And I know it’s much calmer in the off-season. But after this weekend, I just can’t see it. Who wants to sit on Rockville Pike, even at the beach?

Last weekend at the beach had insane traffic!!! I am a remote worker that is at the beach for the season and I was ready to head back to the DC suburbs.

Part of my family was at Rehoboth last weekend and also said it was nuts, even though we’ve found it quieter than usual earlier this summer. Not sure what that was about….

Vaccines DO lower transmission rates and viral load, esp moreso with the boosters. This is inarguable.

Agreed. You know what you're getting when you go to the Delaware beaches -- it's not some secluded coast or a charming old New England town or whatever, but it's close, and it's fun.

There are parts of Rehoboth beach that do not allow weekly rentals. RBYCC area by the bay does not. Only allows monthly rentals. That is why we did not buy there.

That is great. But still no private beach. I think monthly is best of both worlds. Keeps transients out but allows owners to make cash. if I was retired and actually lived there be a selling point

The beaches are overcrowded. No space. The boardwalk at night? Same crowd as ocean city. The hotels? Old and in major need of renovations. The houses? So many crap houses with no pools. Dining? Incredibly limited options.

I just don’t get it. Is it that much better than Bethany, Fenwick, North OC? Maybe it was at one point, but I’m not sure it still is.

The beaches close to any major metro are so ridiculously overpriced at this point. Same with Disney. It’s all about supply and demand. Our family has really started to look at the price tag associated with a local brand trip and plan out a much nicer trip elsewhere. We take the same budget and I price out a few options that are more in line with bucket list trips like, Colorado mountains in the summer, Amazon rainforest or London/Paris staying at nicer hotels.

Agree. Now that our kids are a little older, we're going to hike in the mountains, going to London and Paris, Utah national parks. Sure, occasionally we do a family beach trip, but since rental prices have basically doubled and are now, $400-$500 a night for very modest places at the Outer Banks or Cape May or Rehoboth, it makes more sense for us to really consider our options and find other places to go.

Nostalgia. RB used to be an easy day drive, fun for kids, wasn't trashy, safe, good food and unique shopping.

Went this past summer in August and my adult daughters and I vowed to never go back. Paid more for a weekend at the Breakers, a complete dump in need of gutting and reno, than for a weekend at the Jefferson in Richmond, in high season. Many shops and restaurants closed.

Ha this just shows how different our points of reference can be. I’ve never heard of anyone choosing between Rehoboth and Ocean City. It is typically a choice between Rehoboth and making the trek to Provincetown.

Many shops and restaurants closed?

We are here now in fact, yes it’s raining but we’ve got raincoats and it’s lovely to walk around. Shops and restaurants are open.

Rehoboth and Provincetown are two very different trips. One is three hours away and the other takes twelve hours to get to, though since this is DCUM, most probably get there in two hours on their private jet.

Well I can’t imagine driving to Provincetown so it usually only takes an hour or two more of travel.

We have done the drive a couple times. It’s not the most fun drive, but we brink kayaks, bikes and other beach stuff. Tough to check those items on a flight.
