It's an excellent and needed idea. Clear bookbags are required in our school system as well.

Not the PP, but I worked in an alternative program in a separate public facility. We wanded every kid every day as soon as the got off the bus for weapons. We also checked pockets for phones and any other contraband. Kids would still sneak things in. One kid tried to bring a big hunting knife in.
