DS' college sent us a yard sign to announce his choice

I saw a 'DUKES' sign on a neighbors yard, and thought their kid go into Duke.

Later found out it was JMU.

I noticed this for graduations during COVID but not for college signs.

Also we have a few neighbors that buy the school flag to hang at their porch. A few of our neighbors do this - rotating flags for various schools they are associated with (themselves or kids) and for professional sports teams throughout the year. It's not bragging - just celebrating.

It definitely looked like bragging when a family near us hung a huge flag on the house and all three cars parked out front suddenly had large magnets plus prominent license plate accessories for a certain Ivy League school… right after decisions came out. I guess maybe cool for their kid, but it was a little over the top.

Interesting... In this country, it's ok to show off your wealth (look at those newest Teslas, mansions, manicured lawns, vacation pictures on social media), your body (do I even need to point it out), your "healthy" lifestyle, your "big heart" to charities, or even your love for your pet, but it's bragging when you show your pride as a responsible and caring parent.

Some people buy swag from the bookstore of the elite university where they did their useless master’s degree that accepts anyone who can pay. See: Columbia, USC, NYU, Harvard

Assuming the sign was in purple, not blue, I think the assumption is that it is obvious.

Wondering if this is a common thing to receive? I don't think I've noticed any such signs in our neighborhood, but not a lot of similarly aged kids around here either.

Lucky you. UVA doesn't send these out. I paid for one myself.

That does seem more like bragging. The neighbors we have are not. They put flags out all the time for big football games (both college and NFL) and their kids are going to solid schools but not the kind that get people worked up about on DCUM.

It's bragging if the neighbor's kid is going to a better school than yours. It's school pride if they are going to a lesser school.

I don't know about yard signs, but I do know that every time I get cut off on the road by someone displaying a college on their rear window or bumper, my negative feelings about that school rise considerably!

That's odd because they are fairly common in Upper NW DC.

I will agree there were more last year and the year before...maybe it's too early and they will pop up at the end of the month?

My kid has a "UMD direct admit to CS and honors college w/OOS merit" sign.

Going to college is not an accomplishment

Of course it is. Only like 25% of the country has a college degree. I am the first person in my family to go to college and it felt like a big deal.

Thank you and congrats!

My kid overcame many obstacles (health and disability) to get through K-12 school and graduate. Going to college is a big deal.

This was a covid K-12 east coast private school thing that now colleges are copying.

Agree, I’m in Chevy Chase and remember seeing lots of private school signs but I don’t recall seeing any for colleges.

They make me smile. I am genuinely happy for the kid. It's an exciting time in your life.
