Admin staff will not need to take as much leave because they have so many holidays now. They are going to accrue ton more leave than they would have if they were required to take annual leave for holiday (like the rest of the world). This is going to accrue into a huge liability for APS. This is scandalous from a budget perspective. |
if course this has a significant budgetary impact. The syphax staff were gifted approximately 4 weeks of additional leave. That means that work is not happening during that time. When I build my unit's budget in the federal government- I look at how many man hours it takes to complete a task, and how many tasks we expect to complete (this is somewhat of an oversimplification). Then there is the number of hours that we expect a person to work in a year- accounting for leave and holidays and such. So we get to like 1800 hours a year of 'work'. APS reduced the number of hours they expected staff to work in a year by 160 hours. That means they need more people to accomplish the same amount of work. I do not understand why the school board let Duran get away with this. |

Two weeks of winter break (syphax used to get just a couple days off) + spring break + paid religious days. That’s almost 4 weeks off. They always got federal holidays of course, as they should. No idea how many syphax employees. |
I think there are about 600 staff at syphax. How would you calculate the $ cost of 160 hours lost if around 600 employees? Do You take an average hourly salary or something else? Is the cost of paying out leave separate? |
You asked for evidence of what they're not doing. They used to have seminars for teachers and other school-based staff that explained the retirement process. They no longer do this, but still expect people to give 60 days notice before retiring. |
And as someone pointed out earlier, upon retirement they cash out their leave at 50% the daily rate for sick leave. And annual leave is also paid but can’t remember the rate. The brave YHS teacher who spoke ip about it said it. |
This has to add up to several million a year on cash out liability alone before you even get to lost productivity (hiring more people because you’ve given everyone 6 weeks of paid leave from the getgo). |
This was all done as a gesture of generosity during the height of the pandemic. Duran needs to end it. |
I have so many more examples. Paychecks screwed up. Positions we can’t fill because by the time HR processes them, another school district has already made an offer. Teachers not having what they need when Syphax was in charge of getting it. |
Some staff that are coded as “syphax employees” are itenerant teachers and therapists. Are they included in that 600? |

100x agree. A one time thing during pandemic is not unreasonable. But unbelievable that it’s still ongoing now. Duran needs to walk this back or SB needs to step up and end this. There is way too much need in APS to pay people to be home 4 extra weeks of the year. Looks like the had standard federal holidays us a couple extra before the pandemic and pretty generous annual leave. That’s reasonable. I don’t care if they telework. That’s reasonable too. |
