You think the board should vote on staff leave? I don't. |
Looks like the board is going to be voting on it this summer. There is a new calendar policy out that does a few things, starting two Weeks before Labor Day, 180 days, 2 weeks of winter break. Also seems to specify that these are holidays for staff. This will Make both APS calendar policy permanent and seems to allow 12 month staff are paid for all these days going forward. So let’s sum up: if the school board approves this policy change, teachers will now have a shorter summer break, syphax will never work on any of those holidays/breaks, they will get paid for them (but not 4,000 other staff members) and teachers still won’t have parental leave. Great job, duran! |
Yes. There are major budget implications to offering this much leave. Syphax staff no longer need to use up any of their PTO because they already get all the holidays and breaks off. This will keep accruing and will come home to roost in a few years and require APS to make major cuts to cover this liability. This is a big issue. |
And wow… It just so happens that this is scheduled to be voted on during the summer when most teachers are not there to voice any objection? What a coincidence! |
And if like last year, they may not even allow public comment again this summer. So a vote during the summer when no one is paying attention and probably with no public comment to raise an objection |
Time for an ArlNow shaming? |
LOL, that place is almost as big a cesspool as DCUM. Good luck. |
Almost? The thing is, it does seem to get results, at least sometimes. Public officials don't like getting called out. Other times, there is just the cess, pooling. We never did manage to evict the previous crappy superintendent. |
Alexandria admins get the breaks off also. We are competing with the for administrators. I think this is one of the reasons why we are moving in that direction. I don't care about Syphax, but good school administrators are becoming more scarce. |
So we’re competing with Alexandria who pays all those holidays? What about fairfax and falls church? Any of other districts in NOVA? Nope. Not compelling if Alexandria is making the same bad management decision. |
Latest ape newsletter details what else APS could be paying for:
Why It Matters: As we have noted previously, choosing to prioritize additional holidays for 992 employees poses an opportunity cost on other priorities: For example, an additional 1% COLA for all employees would cost $5.1 million, as discussed in budget work session #4; reinstating parental leave would cost about $1.4 million for four weeks and $2 million for six weeks (budget question #24-72); reducing elementary classes by a planning factor of two would cost about $2.2 million, per the 2023 budget. https://mailchi.mp/6f8810abd23d/arlingtonparentsforeducation-15344566 |
I am generally in favor of providing better benefits to public servants, but I don't know anyone who's had a good interaction with Syphax staff (and lord knows there are enough of them and their numbers seem to be swelling), so rewarding them rather than meeting the needs of students and teachers? NO. |
Agree on both. Better benefits for all employees (public or private). Rewarding syphax staff over eveyone else? Hard pass. Reverse it APS. Being back parental leave for all staff instead. |
At least that cesspool requires some sort of registration, so you know you’re arguing with the same 6-7 crackpots, as opposed to here where you think you’re arguing with 6-7 crackpots but it’s actually only one person. |
They get the breaks but reduced PTO. APS staff gets the breaks plus the same PTO they had all along. It’s disgraceful. NO ONE I’m the real world (including govt workers) gets that much time off. And they’re still not able to process substitute applications timely. Maybe they could if they were always on holiday. Syphax staff works 7 more days than teachers but get paid for the entire year. This is a scandal. |
