APS Syphax Staff Work From Home

Go get a job at Syphax if you want their benefits. Just because you have a job that doesn’t have the same perks doesn’t mean that theirs should be taken away. Life is not fair and tit for tat.

Sure that’s be fine if it was a business calling the shots. This is taxpayer money and they keep adding more staff because they don’t have capacity. They would if they didn’t have all those breaks! Not only that but teachers who need to take care of HR or other admin matters when they are on break can’t because syphax is also closed. This is outrageous and frankly malfeasance on part of school board and Duran.

I'm fine if Syphax is allowed some telework. Same with 12 month staff in schools during break time. They shouldn't be getting 31 days of paid holidays on top of their personal leave. And their personal leave can be cashed in when they leave APS.

+1!

What else could we be paying for in APS if we weren't paying for Syphax staff to have more leave than our county, state or federal employees in the region?

I was at Syphax this week and saw a ton of staff!

Then how about making them work in the office where they will work more effectively with other departments?

Because they don't need to work from an office to get their work done?

"getting done" and "doing well" are not always equivalent.
Even regular businesses are seeing that all the teleworking isn't helping build company morale or maximizing collaboration. APS could at least put a cap on # WFH days.

“Regular businesses” are not seeing this.

Yes, they are.
Some are trying to get workers back in the office more often for precisely the reasons cited.
Even federal employees are seeing the problems of teleworking, but their government departments aren't necessarily doing anything about it. Some jobs CAN'T be fully or most effectively done via 100% telework.

My F500 company and my husband's tech start up have gone office optional permanently. For big meetings or when collaboration in person is needed, people go in, but the default is WFH. Clearly these companies wouldn't be allowing WFH as the default if it wasn't working, now would they?

Same at our well known accounting firm! We go to the office maybe once a month? Most clients still want remote meetings.

Teachers are insanely jealous of central office staff’s ability to WFH, it’s not just in APS, I hear the same in ACPS, FCPS etc. Sorry, your job can’t be done remote, their job translates well to remote work. This is the career you chose, so stop complaining and live your life.

You want the same privileges? Go apply for jobs that have remote work option.

So, the PP is encouraging APS teachers to leave and get other jobs. I wonder what Duran would think of that suggestion. 🤔

Telework is fine. Don't pay them for days off that teachers aren't paid for. Teachers aren't paid for winter break, spring break, federal holidays or the new religious holidays. Syphax now has ALL of those days paid off.

Technically Syphax isn't teleworking but plenty of staff are.

Thanks Syphax person who is probably typing away from home

How much did it cost the taxpayers to fun two extra weeks of paid vacation? That does concern me. My kid’s classrooms don’t even have Kleenex.

Me, too. I don’t care about the telework. I think it’s the extra two weeks of vacay that is causing the backups over there.

Talk to your union then?

Different people have different jobs and if they don't need to be in a school building what is the difference?

The problem is not that they get to telework. The issue is that there are so many people at Syphax that no one in the schools can figure what they’re doing snd how their job helps the schools. This while schools are understaffed, no subs, and getting stupid demands.

?? Why would teachers want to telework?
