I hated those two day training. The saving grace was it was on Zoom and I was good at getting work done while half listening to the bs. Occasionally I'd ask a question about the program like why it's so obsessed with winning and maybe we should focus on growth vs a winner/loser mindset and the trainer would just punt. He was pretty incompetent and would just throw us in to break our rooms and didn't notice that everyone wasn't talking |
Loser talk! |
|
My plan is to annoy the facilitator with questions all day like,
“so when my advisory is cursing and eating snacks as I click through your slides, how exactly do I get them to discuss anything with their peers?” “I see my advisory once a week for 17 minutes. 5 of those minutes are school video announcements. Tell me again how your corporate program umpires their lives? Where is the peer reviewed research proving this?” |
That’s exactly the kinds of questions you should be asking during a training. |
Ooh, now I'm sad I'm in the 4th cohort - I want to be in YOUR session! |
I to dread the training. I fear they are going to put 200 staff in a the cafeteria with admin looking on and have us cycle around at dreadful "stations" to mimic how this may be done in a large corporate setting. The trainers will basically act as cheerleaders saying how wonderful everything is over and over again. The zoom training last summer was surviveable, but this will be a trainwreck and make most staff miserable. The trainers were experts at blowing off any criticism last year. We want SEL, but LiM is not that at all. LiM doesn't really acknowledge or place any value on the often traumatic experiences of our students. |
Personally, I'd prefer that MCPS spent less money on programs like this so we wouldn't have to raise property taxes in order to pay teachers. |
The property tax hike is necessary to pay for more programs like this and the increase in central office positions next year. |
This is the second year I will be required to take training. It’s a huge time suck at my school. A half an hour a week of instruction lost to a philosophy that is culturally irrelevant. |
My school refused to do it during advisory. We have a Leader in Me period carved out of instructional time once a week. |
Same here. We need more teachers and smaller class sizes. Not useless programs like this. The millions of dollars in wasted money needs to be directed to things that actually help atudent performance. This program ain’t it. |
| Do SEIU members do any Leader in Me training? Or just MCEA? |
+1000 |
Can you clarify what about it the students really love? |
| Class sizes are HUGE in our middle school. Why are we wasting any amount of money on this when we should be hiring more teachers. Not more staff, but more teachers. |
