Sorry, but DeSantis is just Jeb! 2.0

Oh barf. It’s just a lawyer in the military. They are military which means they follow orders. So whether he approved or didn’t approve of the Guantanamo actions, if you actually know JAG, you’d understand that they don’t get to pick and choose which military issues they litigate. It’s a like a public defender. Do you think they all actually approve of the activities of the murderers and rapists they defend? No. It’s a job. The marks of excellence are his acceptance to Harvard which over on the college board you are probably gushing about and praying your kid can go. Harvard is always such a mark of excellence except when DeSantis and Cruz have it on their resumes. Then it is shunted aside. Meanwhile Biden actually committed perjury in law school…

Oh no. Read the Harpers piece. He didn't just oversee Gitmo, he was personally involved in the worst torture there. That's not "following orders". It's just despicable.

This doesn’t make sense. He was there as a military official carrying out orders of his superiors. That is a fact. Random military cannot just walk in and torture prisoners. I do not question his personal involvement. A commander of a ship is personally involved in that ship but he is still required to follow orders. You have clearly never participated in a military organization. For crying out loud, shooting people or blowing up buildings in a tank is personal involvement but also following orders. Just stop.

Are we using the Nuremberg Defense now? He was torturing people, but he was just following orders so it was ok! He’s not culpable!

You clearly have no idea what the role or a purpose of a lawyer is. I am one, so let me educate you. A lawyer is often brought into situations to provide supervision and educate people who are executing a program regarding what is and what is not allowed under the relevant laws. Assuming this Harper’s account is true, DeSantis was likely there to say whether the “enhanced” interrogation techniques were allowed under international law or passed the bounds into impermissible torture. DeSantis was there to draw the line. However, he was apparently giving free rein to the sick bastards running that place and maybe even offering pointers about how to be more aggressive, which I guarantee you the non-lawyers would be happy to gobble up.

He was there to give them cover and not only did he do that, he went one step further.

Republicans should demand he account for himself and should investigate these allegations thoroughly. They won’t. But if they want to pretend they are God fearing pro life people they should at least pretend to.

DeSantis will first have to "handle" Trump before he can "handle" Biden. Don't be so sure that Trump won't prevail.

Yeah thanks. Voted for trump twice. He is done. He is a net negative now. He needs to go away and most of us feel that way.

Since you seem so sure that most Republicans agree with you about Trump, can you explain why the Republican establishment as a whole--not just a handful of people--won't disavow Trump?

It isn’t necessary to have a war with trump. He still motivates a lot of people.

I get that Trump motivates people so they don't want to cut him loose, but Trump also has the ability to inflict serious damage on DeSantis and whomever else he tussles with during the primaries. And if he doesn't prevail in the primaries, he will spend his time attacking the GOP establishment and their anointed candidate. He will keep communicating with and riling up his base (the folks who are in his cult of personality) and will draw votes away from the GOP candidate. He will not fall in line and support the GOP candidate who will go up against Biden. So as much as you'd like to dismiss Trump, he is not going away. He will burn it all down if he has to.

I don’t dismiss him. Your analysis of him is spot on. As I said, he has become a net negative. He is a take no prisoners kind of guy and he will absolutely lash out at anyone and everyone that challenges him whether it’s good for the Republican Party or the country or not. And republicans know it! He is definitely the old guy who yells outrageous stuff all the time and so he is going to end up ignored. Yes some people still want him but they want to win more than they want him. He wants him to be president more than he wants a republican to be president. He feels like he got a raw deal and frankly I think he did with Russia collusion hoax and COVID happening. But that’s the way it went and now he is a has been. He doesn’t know it but he is. But like Barack, and Bill Clinton, he fires people up. So he is going to be a helpful motivating tool and then once DeSantis declares in May, he will just rail agains DeSantis and I suspect DeSantis will do what he does which is to obliquely reference trump but not fire back until the debates. And then I think DeSantis will just rise above as the most poised, intelligent, forward looking, hopeful, candidate.

HOPEFUL?! You listen to Ron DeSantis and come away feeling HOPEFUL?! Good gd.

High income Republicans also have PTSD from Trump. So yeah, they are “hopeful” when they listen to DeSantis - they hope he can dispense of Trump and then beat Biden. Because right now they feel like a bunch of losers.

Why do you think he has not been indicted? The left cant believe it looks like he will actually be nominated again. They dont want to do anything to screw that up.

Huh? The left do believe that Trump can win again because (1) the polling all shows Trump with commanding leads and (2) go to any rural area and you still see Trump flags and signs. The rural white base wants Trump.

It seems to me that it’s the wealthy DeSantis supporters who can’t face reality - they are stuck with Trump again. But that’s the deal with the devil they made in 2016.

Yes. He will be the nominee. That is incredible. I think a lot of people find it difficult to understand his continuing appeal after he lost to Biden and after his candidates did poorly in the mid terms.

To all the deranged anti-FL haters: why do you think FL is the fastest growing state? Why have so many people moved there? Do ya think they are all masochists looking for pain?

Demographics. The largest contingent of Americans in history are all retiring and they want no taxes + sunshine. The pandemic + stock market surge compressed that schedule so a bunch retired at the same time instead of drawing down slowly.

The older ladies and teachers at my son’s preschool all retired in March 2020. The average instructor age went down by probably 15 years within 12 months. Same thing happened across the country at daycares and schools. This partially explains the big teacher shortage; they took their pensions and moved

Makes sense. Not sure people with school aged children are that impressed with how he handles education. I would worry my kid would be an a disadvantage coming from Florida schools.

I will also add that conservatives I know from Blue areas in the Northeast and MD/CA also moved to Florida. Once Trump lost in 2020 and they saw Democrats sweep local + state governments, they were more likely to jump down to Florida for ideological reasons. It is certainly a draw for a subset of wealthier conservatives who can afford to maintain two homes.

Good for them - what do they plan to do when they are literally under water half the time?

Underwater and underinsured. Good luck insuring your home. trying to help my parents with this. I have zero confidence they will ever be able to collect on this policy we managed to buy should they need it.

No one has linked any evidence that DeSantis claimed to be a fighter pilot. The only "evidence" is a pic of DeSantis in a flight helmet.

And that makes sense because when he was assigned to a SEAL team, he was deployed to Fallujah. Helicopters were a major form of transportation in that theater and it would make sense someone deployed with SEALs would have needed to like, get on a helicopter and be able to use the comms through the helmet.

I understand OP might be a bit dumb and think anyone in a flight helmet is 1) a pilot (not true) or playing dress up as a pilot, and that 2) all pilots are fighter pilots. You'd have to believe both of these's things to reach OP's conclusion.

He also never claimed to be a fighter pilot. He graduated from Harvard Law and went into JAG.

This thread is embarrassing in like 100 ways.

For DeSantis, yes.

Actually, no. It is embarrassing for Democrats who think pointing this out is in someway a negative for DeSantis.
He has never claimed to be a pilot. Never.
And, the fact that this was one of his responsibilities is not surprising.

And, pointing something like this out just highlights the fact that DeSantis has served in the military unlike others in high office.

This whole shtick worked super well for John Kerry. And Mike Pompeo really burnished his record with his combat in Germany. DeSantis should definitely make a few more fighter pilot commercials.
