A JAG is supposed to be an elite, honorable lawyer. The best of the best. And the ones I've known have been. Overseeing torture is shameful, the worst of the worst.
Oh barf. It’s just a lawyer in the military. They are military which means they follow orders. So whether he approved or didn’t approve of the Guantanamo actions, if you actually know JAG, you’d understand that they don’t get to pick and choose which military issues they litigate. It’s a like a public defender. Do you think they all actually approve of the activities of the murderers and rapists they defend? No. It’s a job. The marks of excellence are his acceptance to Harvard which over on the college board you are probably gushing about and praying your kid can go. Harvard is always such a mark of excellence except when DeSantis and Cruz have it on their resumes. Then it is shunted aside. Meanwhile Biden actually committed perjury in law school…
Oh no. Read the Harpers piece. He didn't just oversee Gitmo, he was personally involved in the worst torture there. That's not "following orders". It's just despicable.
This doesn’t make sense. He was there as a military official carrying out orders of his superiors. That is a fact. Random military cannot just walk in and torture prisoners. I do not question his personal involvement. A commander of a ship is personally involved in that ship but he is still required to follow orders. You have clearly never participated in a military organization. For crying out loud, shooting people or blowing up buildings in a tank is personal involvement but also following orders. Just stop.
Are we using the Nuremberg Defense now? He was torturing people, but he was just following orders so it was ok! He’s not culpable! You clearly have no idea what the role or a purpose of a lawyer is. I am one, so let me educate you. A lawyer is often brought into situations to provide supervision and educate people who are executing a program regarding what is and what is not allowed under the relevant laws. Assuming this Harper’s account is true, DeSantis was likely there to say whether the “enhanced” interrogation techniques were allowed under international law or passed the bounds into impermissible torture. DeSantis was there to draw the line. However, he was apparently giving free rein to the sick bastards running that place and maybe even offering pointers about how to be more aggressive, which I guarantee you the non-lawyers would be happy to gobble up. He was there to give them cover and not only did he do that, he went one step further. Republicans should demand he account for himself and should investigate these allegations thoroughly. They won’t. But if they want to pretend they are God fearing pro life people they should at least pretend to.
