+1 this rings so true. I thought Red Lobster was a fancy special occasion restaurant. I always got shrimp scampi and loved it and remember it to this day. It was a great childhood - simple and never felt lacking at the time. Now there is more awareness of what other wealthier ppl (outside your own circle) are doing and just a lot more spending. |
+1 I agree - I think that is what OP is missing - it is not about the food, it is about whether (wherever and whatever the experience was) was a happy one. |
| Travel back in the day was driving to visit family and sometimes to a new place. Food in the cooler. It was simple and fun. My kids are still at home and some of their favorite vacays have been the simple ones with cousins having a blast at the pool, etc. I think there’s this pressure now to have your kids go to X places (Disney, Europe, out West, Caribbean) before they head to college but truth is it’s about the family more than anything. |
Red Lobster was considered a bit more of an expensive restaurant when I was a kid, too. |
| I resent my parents for blowing the college money my grandfather set aside for me. |
| When I was a kid I would have preferred to eat every meal out, as an adult I understand why we ate two meals at the vacation rental every day. We do the same now with our kids. |
We went on 2 vactions as a kid: 1 to Disney, 1 to Busch Gardens FL. And my parents saved YEARS to go and did it as cheaply as possible. Stayed in sh-- hotels offsite of the parks; crap seats on the flights; eating cheaply; no souvenirs, etc. I didn't really know any better so I was not resentful. Especially since I know now how expensive things are. I don't fully understand how or why someone "resents" this sort of thing but I'm also not going to crucify them either, like some of you all. There are clearly other issues going on besides this. So, maybe remember that and keep your nasty comments in check? Damn. Some of you are really not nice people. |
