Your childhood memories of vacation, food, and going out to eat? Are you resentful?

Vacations were camping or a cabin where we cooked all of the food. We sometimes went to McDs once on the trip.

I think it was better. No resentment at all. My kids have grown up with a very different life where we live comfortably and they think nothing of asking for expensive take out multiple times per week. I don’t always get it but my point is eating out isn’t a treat for them.

+1 this rings so true. I thought Red Lobster was a fancy special occasion restaurant. I always got shrimp scampi and loved it and remember it to this day.

It was a great childhood - simple and never felt lacking at the time. Now there is more awareness of what other wealthier ppl (outside your own circle) are doing and just a lot more spending.

+1

I agree - I think that is what OP is missing - it is not about the food, it is about whether (wherever and whatever the experience was) was a happy one.

Travel back in the day was driving to visit family and sometimes to a new place. Food in the cooler. It was simple and fun. My kids are still at home and some of their favorite vacays have been the simple ones with cousins having a blast at the pool, etc. I think there’s this pressure now to have your kids go to X places (Disney, Europe, out West, Caribbean) before they head to college but truth is it’s about the family more than anything.

Red Lobster was considered a bit more of an expensive restaurant when I was a kid, too.

I resent my parents for blowing the college money my grandfather set aside for me.

When I was a kid I would have preferred to eat every meal out, as an adult I understand why we ate two meals at the vacation rental every day. We do the same now with our kids.

I’ve been on here about 13/14 years now and see that people still do bring foods to cook while on vacations. I never traveled as a child but I’ve done this as an adult to my own children never realizing this can be a negative memory. Not for every meal but I have taken things like oatmeal, cereal for quick breakfasts in the hotel room.

I did not go out to eat often as a child either, we had little money, single mom household and I loved every second and have fond memories of those times. I could count them on one hand but they were throughly appreciated. I even remember what I ordered.

This person sounds like a monumental brat, in desperate need of some adversity in their life.

This. I didn't grow up with much money and in years that my parents could afford a trip to the beach we did it as cheaply as possible. We still had a great time, and I have great memories.

We went on 2 vactions as a kid: 1 to Disney, 1 to Busch Gardens FL. And my parents saved YEARS to go and did it as cheaply as possible. Stayed in sh-- hotels offsite of the parks; crap seats on the flights; eating cheaply; no souvenirs, etc. I didn't really know any better so I was not resentful. Especially since I know now how expensive things are.

I don't fully understand how or why someone "resents" this sort of thing but I'm also not going to crucify them either, like some of you all. There are clearly other issues going on besides this. So, maybe remember that and keep your nasty comments in check? Damn. Some of you are really not nice people.
