If your DC's secondary school appears to have a pipeline to a specific Top 10 college...

You can choose easy majors in any school if that's what you want. I'm comparing apple to apple rigorous majors.

Chicago is an amazing top school. Kids are self selecting there who like academics and free speech. By the way you can’t ED1 an Ivy and then count on Chicago as a backup school; the admissions director was very clear that they want kids who want to be at Chicago, not kids who are only there because Harvard dinged them. That’s why ED1 is so important.

If Chicago did not want Harvard or other Ivy rejects then they would not have had ED2 - they have ED2 because they want those kids. So yes, it is a backup of sorts for kids.

It’s really about HYPSM rejects. After HYPSM, the prestige of the remaining T20 schools like Columbia, Northwestern, Emory etc is about the same.

Only about 10% of HYPSM graduates do something worthwhile with their lives. Others simply work to make a living, like any other college graduates. And only 0.1% to 1% may actually contribute to the society in a substantial way. None of the DCUM posters who went to HYPSM is in the 10% group. They work to make a living. Just another another cog in the wheel. Just another brick in the wall. As for their children, only time will tell.
