Nope. I think we should have cops outside the school, like we have now, that deal with crimes not discipline. They should be able to respond in < 5 minutes which is more than what SROs could do. Cops are not disciplinarians they are law enforcement officers. Security guards should do the items listed above. Principals, Counselors and therapists should deal with disciplinary actions. Principals should be able to expel not move students around. |
SROs can be in school and not deal with disciplinary issues. Their presence can be a deterrent from kids bringing guns to school. |
That is not an option in MCPS. Or, really in public school, in general. It is not equitable, and public schools are required to educate all kids. |
So who do you want breaking up fist fights or doing hall sweeps to make sure kids go to class? Your logic is nuts. |
I prefer they catch the person with the gun outside the school. I don’t see the value of them in the school. |
That’s not true. I know kids that have been expelled. It costs $ because you still have to provide them an education. |
Children who are disruptive, hostile and a danger to others need to be isolated from their home schools in a separate environment. If not permanently, at least until they can prove they can be trusted to behave in their home school environment. |
Google STARS program in Denver. |
The RWNJs posting here aren't reasonable and couldn't care less about fairness. |
I'm not a therapist or counselor, but I don't believe counselors or therapists are trained to break up physical dangers nor do they desire to do that kind of thing. In the healthcare space, counselors and therapists rely on security guards to enable them to safely do their job. So why should school environments be any different? |
Dangerous yes. Disruptive is too subjective… one persons disruptive is another persons developmentally normal. Also are you going to kick kids out with Tourette’s because they are disruptive. Kids need to learn to learn in classrooms tray are not perfectly quiet. |
Yes some are. Google STARS program in Denver. They should call the cop that is outside the school if it is a dangerous situation, which is rare. Just like nurses do in the ER. It’s amazing what happens when you have people trained to deescalate. |
I don't know what hospitals you've been to, but security guards are there and that's who nurses call. |
MCPS can define disruptive. But some things would include: - Preventing other students from learning by harassing, bullying or taunting peers and teachers - Being intentionally and consistently inappropriate in class (blasting loud music in headphones or using profane language It's not hard to build a definition of this. MCPS has a code of conduct for a reason. |
I would, too, but that's not always possible, so if you have SROs in schools, they can be a deterrent. |
