It's about the same; there's just a rise in postings about these things to fearmonger and help bring back SROs.

Unless your head has been so far up your a$$ that you can't read the news, you are playing down the uptick in violence in our schools

No it’s just more publicized

As a way to fearmonger to achieve political ends like bringing back SROs or making public schools into kid prison

You know what sounds a lot like prison? A place where people openly abuse substances and violence is tolerated and permitted.

Maybe it's not the parents who want better security and more stringent discipline in place who want to turn schools into "kid prison," but it's those who think that the current state is "just fine" or "not a big deal" that are interested in maintaining the kid prison dystopia.

I think a lot of the kids at RM, which has had 2 instances of guns on campus in as many weeks, would prefer SROs come back.
Maybe kids at Magruder and Einstein too. A lot of the parents want them back too. Sadly MCPD is so understaffed due to recruitment problems that I’m not sure they can staff the program.

-RM parent whose kids feel that way

RM .. the school with the security guard who was raping a student? While they had an SRO?

Lol, not a great example.

so we should get rid of security guards, too?

Since you respect cops so much ask them what they feel about security guards.

When lost at the mall, cops recommend that a child never approach a security guard but approach a women with children.

Security guards should be outside schools making sure threats from outside do not get in.

They should ensure doors lock, cameras work, security plans are in place.

They should not have contact with students.

ok, so no cops, no security guards, only teachers and good students who don't fight, bring weapons to school, no sexual assaults.

ITA. Can you make that happen in all MCPS public schools?

The problem with progressives is that they are pollyanna kumbaya, "hug it out", delusional

Nope.

I think we should have cops outside the school, like we have now, that deal with crimes not discipline. They should be able to respond in < 5 minutes which is more than what SROs could do. Cops are not disciplinarians they are law enforcement officers.

Security guards should do the items listed above.

Principals, Counselors and therapists should deal with disciplinary actions.

Principals should be able to expel not move students around.

I'm not a therapist or counselor, but I don't believe counselors or therapists are trained to break up physical dangers nor do they desire to do that kind of thing. In the healthcare space, counselors and therapists rely on security guards to enable them to safely do their job. So why should school environments be any different?

Yes some are. Google STARS program in Denver. They should call the cop that is outside the school if it is a dangerous situation, which is rare. Just like nurses do in the ER.

It’s amazing what happens when you have people trained to deescalate.

I don't know what hospitals you've been to, but security guards are there and that's who nurses call.

+1 Teachers shouldn't be the ones having to break up fights. It takes several minutes for the cops to arrive to a school. Those several minutes can be the difference between minor and major injuries during a fight.

I posted this before: I had a math teacher in HS who was all of 4'11", probably 90lbs. She was an awesome teacher. Is the ^^PP suggesting that this tiny teacher break up fights between two large males? My goodness. Has PP tried to break up fights between two adult sized male students let alone multiple students?

Nurses, therapists and counselors don't break up physical fights. They are sometimes trained in restraint for some settings but that is not MCPS approved. Why don't you volunteer to break up a fight and let us know how it goes?

Yes, I invite PP and Mark Elrich to come to my HS to break up the fights. It's a HS that PP probably would never dare send her kid to, but expects everybody else to deal with it.

SROs have been found not be detrimental with younger kids. They are more likely to act inappropriately and more aggressively where it is not needed.

Nurses, therapists and counselors also don’t have cops talking to patients. They are outside and readily available, like cops should be.

I have volunteered in ED classes but they don’t train volunteers in restraints. We also didn’t call the cops fir outbursts, we called a counselor who deescalated the outburst.

Ridiculous how many serious incidents we've had in MCPS this past few weeks alone.

I've never started a petition. Would MCPS/BOE/Elrich even care?

Nope. The BOE / Elrich only care about pushing their 'progressive' agenda. That is also what voters want. SROs are not a part of that agenda, so it won't happen.

It’s not like SROs are good for anything, though.

All cops are bastards anyway.

You are such a smart one.

I am, actually. SROs are worthless. Parkland is a case in point. Cops, by and large, are dumb AF. The profession doesn’t attract the best and brightest and the training is abysmal. We don’t need these people around our children.

You don’t want fights broken up by security guards and the cops stationed outside the school.

You want someone to call the counselor’s office?
