Just For Fun: If you could go to any college...

As true now as when F. Scott wrote it a century ago: “Princeton drew him most, with its atmosphere of bright colors and its alluring reputation as the pleasantest country club in America.”

That is if you like the idea of college not being in a city.

And I would attend homecoming every year.

I love COA!

I’d go to Smith.

What do you love about the Cost of Attendance at Smith ?

Not PP but if you look at their post, they are responding to someone saying "College of the Atlantic" so I think that's what "COA" refers to.

If I could attend any college, I would prefer a large university with a lot of diversity in all of its forms, but especially socioeconomic diversity.

Fascinating question; thank you for posting it! There are so many considerations to juggle. Brown checks a lot of boxes - mid-sized city, ability to wander academically - but (as with the PP who is worried about being a second class citizen if she is not in a blue state) I would be concerned about being unpersoned because many of my views are heretical to the zeitgeist there. Same with Wesleyan, where the fantastic music program would have been right up my alley. Both of those great schools also have a reputation for not being pressure cookers, which I am coming to believe (based on my daughter's experience in a highly competitive environment) is an important consideration.

On reflection, I'd probably still go for Brown (a bit bigger than Wesleyan so easier to maintain some level of anonymity) but that Wesleyan music program is awfully appealing.

Julliard or RISD - just for the experience of being among the best artists of a generation.

Same. I really liked the idea of the CLAREMONT colleges - separate schools in one location. I also liked the idea of the Five Colleges in Amherst. Of course, the distance and/or climate turned me away.

sorry, my earlier post said Pomona. My bad. It is the Claremont colleges.

Yes. Surely the PP knew that?

Colorado College.

If you pick Harvard (or maybe Stanford or MIT), you'll never have your bona fides questioned. But I'd still be leaning to Princeton or Yale.

I went to Princeton and my final choice came down to Princeton and Williams. This was before US News was rating each #1 in their respective categories - just liked each for different reasons.

Had a good time at Princeton, but always wondered what the experience at a smaller college in a more rural setting would have been like, so definitely Williams if we're getting re-dos.
