Latin Cooper and Yu Ying possibly purchasing the Kirov Ballet building (W5)

Not true. Building sits on an acre of land. The acre could be landscaped nicely and there’s room for a basketball court.

The inconvenient truth is that poor minority kids who study Chinese in public schools tend not to get enough Chinese or English, absent inputs DCPCS isn't providing. Their families can't afford to reinforce Chinese at home with au pairs, tutors, camps etc. They also can't afford to provide extra ELA inputs. In MoCo, the 2 Chinese ES immersion programs send poor kids to summer immersion camps free of charge. YuYing does not.

Poor kids in Ward 7 and 8 are probably better off staying close to home for their schooling, as long as they attend a well-run charter. Call me names if you have the energy, but I'm not wrong.

The last of a “dying” breed.

I would think, regardless of your opinion about the space, an identified permanent space and collab with YY is a HUGE PLUS. I say this as the WL numbers have moved recently for both Latin (even main campus has moved a few when i thought that was unheard of)... we are high up and don't stand a chance either way. I find it strange BASIS hasn't moved in months (no joke).... we are high up so doesn't matter either way either too.....thoughts?

It feels like a kick in the teeth to ITS middle already.

Yeah it’s funny Latin 1 and 2 WLs are moving but not Basis. In a few years Basis will be really hard to get into.

Latest WL movement (through June)
Latin 1 offered WL seats
5th grade - 6
6th grade - 1

BASIS offered WL seats
5th grade - 50
6th grade - 0

"In a few years Basis will be really hard to get into." This strikes me as unlikely.

Self-selection.

A lot of kids couldn’t handle Basis and parents want a school that is easy and socially promotes.

We have been in that building and on the grounds. Behind it is the parking lot. It’s right in the corner of North Capitol St.

I have no idea how that is true that there is an acre of land. I do t see much land/grass. The building and parking lot takes up most of everything.

Exactly. It’s a parking lot. At a busy intersection. No thanks.

Come on, the site will be redeveloped if the two charter schools purchase it. A high fence can be built the current parking lot will no longer be there.

Makes you feel good, doesn't it, to assert this on almost every DC charter middle school related thread? You, PP, are insecure about your choice of BASIS.

Flash forward 8 years and some of the kids who allegedly couldn't handle BASIS, whose families turned down 5th grade spots for those in other programs, are off to more competitive colleges than some of the BASIS grads. The big picture is far more complex than you claim.

Actually, I am a first-time poster and have no affiliation with Basis.

You sound pretty defensive and insecure, though.

Maybe, but there really isn’t a lot of space. Especially to share. I live nearby, I wish it was a better option, but it just isn’t.

I’ll be curious to see how the BASIS waitlist ultimately moves compared to Latin II. The Latin II waitlist has moved nearly 50 spots as well so far as I can tell. I’m not sure how much more the BASIS waitlist will move whereas my Latin II waitlist number continues to decrease.

??? I really don’t understand the issue with “space”. I think many if you have an extremely suburban mentality.
