Yeah it’s funny Latin 1 and 2 WLs are moving but not Basis. In a few years Basis will be really hard to get into.

Latest WL movement (through June)
Latin 1 offered WL seats
5th grade - 6
6th grade - 1

BASIS offered WL seats
5th grade - 50
6th grade - 0

Also Latin 1 offered a few EA WL seats
5th grade - 5 offers made and apparently 10 more on the waitlist

Technically 11 offers in total, but no, the Latin 1 list is not really moving much. There've been no additional offers on the regular waitlist since early June.

When comparing WL movement, it’s important to remember that BASIS has 135 5th grade seats to fill, compared to Latin 1’s 95 seats and Cooper’s 42 (or so).

Not true. Building sits on an acre of land. The acre could be landscaped nicely and there’s room for a basketball court.

We have been in that building and on the grounds. Behind it is the parking lot. It’s right in the corner of North Capitol St.

I have no idea how that is true that there is an acre of land. I do t see much land/grass. The building and parking lot takes up most of everything.

Exactly. It’s a parking lot. At a busy intersection. No thanks.

Come on, the site will be redeveloped if the two charter schools purchase it. A high fence can be built the current parking lot will no longer be there.

Maybe, but there really isn’t a lot of space. Especially to share. I live nearby, I wish it was a better option, but it just isn’t.

??? I really don’t understand the issue with “space”. I think many if you have an extremely suburban mentality.

You must be new here. Shortly you'll hear from the person who hates Basis because it doesn't have a library or computer lab!

Redevelop what? They are not going to tear down the building with the cost and build new.

Have you even driven by that area? Where exactly do you think the teachers and staff will park? On north Capitol street and Harewood road where there is no street parking? Or the small, small street behind the school which basically has no spaces with houses there.

Let's just go with facts and numbers from the real estate listing.

4301 Harewood Rd NE, Washington, DC is a parochial school, private school property that contains 28,754 Sq. Ft. sq ft and was built in 1950. This home last sold for $9,795,000 in September 2019.
Parcel #
3666 0014
Lot Size
93,818 Sq. Ft.
Property Type
Parochial School, Private School
County
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA
Living Area Sq. Ft.
28,754 Sq. Ft.
Year Built
1950

29000 sq feet is not enough to host anything. My guess is they build out the house site, including underground parking, maybe roof top play spaces, but this is certainly not enough room for two full schools

I am not that person (have never posted about it), but it is one of the many reasons we turned down a spot at BASIS. And it is also why despite close proximity to this proposed location, we will most likely not be interested in changing our decision on Cooper as well. You can call it suburban or whatever you like, it’s just not a great location. Honestly I was hoping for better. My school commute would be vastly improved!

who controls that field across the street from the location that hardly ever has anyone on it?

You mean Archbishop Carroll, the giant name on everything around the field?

Regardless, Basis still has 40 more seats to fill, so obviously that affects the WL.

Overall, Basis is only somewhat smaller than Latin (663 students to 700).

I can't believe they haven't moved the WL in two months or so? Really??

The main reason the BASIS waitlist would move at this point is if an enrolled student gets into a school they ranked higher on their lottery application and still prefer that school. Of course there could be students who give up their space to move or go private as well but I think at this point the former would be the more likely scenario. If the waitlist moves at all it won’t be by much. Historical waitlist data for BASIS the past couple of years indicates that few if any offers are made after August.

Anonymous wrote:For sure the people on here squealing about Latin not locating in Wards 7 or 8 are simply blanket anti-charter and would absolutely throw a fit if Latin DID locate in wards 7 or 8 because either a) those wards already have 17 charter schools, it’s overkill or b) Latin would be poaching students from the already struggling middle and high schools there, blaming it for further underenrollment in DCPS. Anti charter people always have a nefarious narrative to offer no matter what these schools do.

Latin can’t win here with the detractors so they are carrying on with their mission and goals—which demonstrably include diversity goals and more robust outreach and transportation planning.

My family is a part of the charter system, so definitely not anti-charter, but I find it disappointing that they didn't try harder to find something in Wards 7 or 8.
