Improvement? Hardly. The fiasco in January calling for National Guard to drive kids to school? 2100+ staff out sick, 21 schools shut down for two weeks, 9%+ of the student body infected? Using federal covid money for $1M on bocce ball, $2M on discrimination training, $2M on Kid Museum? Holding kids at Magruder while the parents wait outside, showing up late because she doesn't live in the County so needed a police escort through traffic, but had the fashion sense to wear a pink outfit for the shooting? Going on a recruiting junket to pick up two personal awards at her alma mater when last year MCEA indicated 500 teachers wanted to retire or leave and this year was over 900?

Guess some of us our twisted as we like that schools were kept open all year. We’re okay with spending money on bocce ball as its an inclusive team sport. We’re okay with funds being spent on discrimination training. We understanding that kids we’re not kept in Magruder due to a press release but because of protocols and safety. We also know that teachers all across the country want to retire or leave the profession. Not great in general but not unique to MCPS. If these are the only faults that folks can find w/ McKnight then she must be doing a awesome job.

I was in the building during the lockdowns with me students. I felt everything was handled professionally by the police. Yes, we could have let kids use the bathrooms, but everything else made sense to me. Unfortunately, superintendent doesn’t get to tell police how to do their job..

I believe that according to the Gillett Amendment, "appropriated funds may not be used to pay a publicity expert unless specifically appropriated for that purpose." In other words, it has to be explicitly called out and authorized by the lawmakers for the purposes of hiring a publicity expert.

I'm a little fuzzy whether a judge would consider "communications" specific enough, since "communications" can mean different things than "influencing social media on DCUMS"? MCPS spends so much on attorneys, (over $11M?) that my guess is they don't mind testing case law on the topic?

Maryland also has a rich history of public corruption, so it's difficult to punish offenders.

Yes she saw us through a tough time, but I think even she would agree that her job performance wasn't exactly amazing last year. But I'm cautiously optimistic about the coming year, and will give her the benefit of the doubt.

What stops New board from finding a replacement on day one? Is there any restriction?

Sticking with a craptastic superintendent because firing her will make it harder to find a new superintendent is exactly why the BOE should not have given Dr. McKnight the permanent job. However, the BOE could do a better job of supervising MCPS, controlling the Central Office bloat, questioning student progress, and creating grading policies to improve education till Dr. McKnight’s initial contract ends.

Except there is no evidence she is ‘craptastic’ as Superintendent since she’s only been in the job a week. Further they’d have to appoint a new interim and do a new search at a point that they are suppose to be starting everything for the new school year.

What exactly are they RUNNING to? Because if they are running to FCPS for something they are going to be disappointed. Oh btw they have a new Super also, so we’ll have to see what she does. More importantly maybe if folks stop RUNNING places and actual work in the community to help understand and resolve issues everything would get better.

I agree - this beating of the rigor drum mystifies me. When I hear it on this board it is rarely about content, but instead is about deadlines or taking away the ability for children learn from their mistakes via retake, rather than have them live in fear and terror of having a bad day. When the grades count, in HS, the level of difficulty in the material is there. I do not want my kids living in terror from unreasonable policies that cause problems for the kids that misplace their assignment, or have 5 tests on the same day. There is no reason to saddle this generation of kids with such dated inflexible approaches. The point is to learn - let them retake, let them find their assignment at home or in their binder. We really should rethink the elements of education that come from British Public Schools. We are a long way from there here in 2022

Agree! And the goal of keeping schools open was achieved. Also McKnight was an interim last year not the actual Superintendent. That comes with different authority and a different set of goals/mindset. Seems some folks don’t know that. Also seems some DCUM folks believe all changes and improvements can happen overnight.

Yes she saw us through a tough time, but I think even she would agree that her job performance wasn't exactly amazing last year. But I'm cautiously optimistic about the coming year, and will give her the benefit of the doubt.

If she doesn’t know how to run a school system properly by now, why would you let things get even worse?

Her superintendent appointment was effective 8 days ago. No matter who gets elected to the board, they're not going to "get in a new superintendent" for at least four years.

What stops New board from finding a replacement on day one? Is there any restriction?

There's a contract they'd have to buy out.

Sticking with a craptastic superintendent because firing her will make it harder to find a new superintendent is exactly why the BOE should not have given Dr. McKnight the permanent job. However, the BOE could do a better job of supervising MCPS, controlling the Central Office bloat, questioning student progress, and creating grading policies to improve education till Dr. McKnight’s initial contract ends.

I get that some people feel threatened by an AA woman in charge, but seriously just posting these assertions without any facts does everyone a disservice. So far she's done an excellent job and to state otherwise is blatant misinformation.

She had the same job last year. She received votes of no confidence from two employee unions. I think we have already seen the downward spiral she wants to send the school system. Everyone in Central Office spends so much time focusing on their next promotion that very little is being done to improve the education students are receiving.

This is exactly what is lacking in current board members and leadership. Let this election result in retirement of incumbents and a fresh start with a brand new MCPS leadership in central office. A lot of clean up is required for the bright future of all students
