Justin Bieber is partially paralyzed - WTH ?

Anonymous
Late to this but as someone who had a completely idiopathic (unexplained) palsy of a different cranial nerve, I understand why people are looking for some plausible and coherent explanation here around drugs or vaccines or whatever. I felt the same way when it happened to me. There was no explanation, despite numerous tests, neurologists and ultimately specialized neuro-opthamologists at the Wilmer Eye Institute. One day my right eye felt funny; by two weeks later my eyelid and eyeball were immobilized. My condition (third nerve palsy) tends to heal on its own and it did for me. I have posted here several times bc it was DCUM that persuaded me to get the problem checked in the first place!

Count yourself lucky if you've never had a weird medical condition with no known cause!

You can get shingles if you have immunity to chicken pox through vaccine , or through infection

This.

In her case, covid+smoking+birth control pills+congenital heart condition seems like a possible perfect storm that could lead to mini-stroke. Hard to say with him, he's had so many issues. But, yes, very unusual for two people in their 20s to have the kinds of medical issues that usually affect much older people.

I’ve known 3 people who had mini strokes: 2 women in their 20s and my 93 year old grandmother. Her condition didn’t surprise me at all, COVID or no COVID.

The only people who get shingles are those who have already had the chicken pox and therefore the virus lays dormant in their body and comes alive again later in life as shingles.

Past tense? Lol

My first thought. Drug use can cause the facial paralysis he’s experiencing. Although it’s theoretically possible I find the absence of rash, as the kids say, sus.

I had Bells Palsy likely caused by shingles. I had a single tiny lesion in my ear. He looks and describes exactly what I experienced.

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is very similar but more severe and wide spread neurological symptoms accompanying the face paralysis and less likely to recover completely.

I hope you recovered fully. My sister did but a friend did not.

I had Ramsey Hunt onset four years ago. Bieber apparently was diagnosed right away so there is an excellent chance he will fully recover. Most people, particularly Americans, do not have access to such excellent healthcare as he does, and thus are misdiagnosed. If you do not go on the proper drugs within 72 hours of onset, it is less likely you will recover. Any other questions, ask away.

Pp can you tell us your initial symptoms and how you got diagnosed and any advice for treatment?

You can get shingles if you had the varicella vaccine as opposed to an infection. You just can.

That’s because it’s a live virus vaccine.

Exactly. Shingles in a very stressed person like him- at his age- is really not that uncommon. I don’t get all these conspiracy theories on here. When I read he had nerve compression as a complication of shingles I was like, “oh”. It’s just not that weird.

And to another poster- yes if a young person in a Lyme - endemic area develops Bell’s palsy, it’s usually assumed to be from Lyme. Don’t know if Bieber lives in a Lyme endemic area

(But to add- it doesn’t matter since he doesn’t have Bell’s palsy)

A quick Google search verifies that you are right although it is extremely rare. But then, Justin Bieber is an extremely rare kind of guy!

This made him more susceptible to the virus and could have weakened his immune system enough to activate shingles. This is happening in record numbers to young (vaccinated) people worldwide. I hope for a full recovery for Justin but we need to be honest regarding the potential cause.

This is all false information and incredibly irresponsible of you to post. Go back to Facebook.

Okay Mr Faux Fact-checker. There are people in this thread who’ve described the same issue.

Actually her issue wasn’t as rare as you might think COVID or not. She is a migraine sufferer and increasing that’s considered a contraindication to birth control pills, which she had recently started… precisely because of blood clot risk. When you throw in the COVID and the hole in her heart? I would guess the odds of this happening were higher than you’d guess.

Did you read the articles about him? Ramsay Hunt is caused by Shingles. He’s been on tour for over a year and I believe he also had COVID a few months ago. Shingles was ripe to happen with the tour stress and immunity wipe out from COVID.

It sounds like they googled non suspicious causes of facial paralysis to tell the media about. He has no reason to tell us about the details of his medical conditions. You have to admit it’s strange they both have neurological crises in a year

No, I don’t think it’s strange given they’ve had COVID recently.

It would be extraordinarily unlikely for them both to develop such serious side effects of COVID as young healthy adults. Again, if it was one of them I wouldn’t be suspicious, but they are either an extraordinary statistical anomaly or they

You are wrong, and I agree with the multiple posters pointing to their COVID infections.
The effects of a COVID infection on the immune and nervous systems are likely related to his condition, and the microclotting are likely related to hers.

What am I wrong about? It is rare for people to get such serious side effects (not saying it doesn’t happen). So two people who are not related getting very rare COVID side effects would be statistically extremely unlikely.

Yes, the word 'rare' is wrong in this context.

Oh do tell me more. What percentage of people in their 20s with COVID end up with paralysis or mini strokes?

But he doesn’t have Bell’s Palsy

The syndrome he has is from shingles.

Maybe don’t try diagnosing people you have never met or talked to from media reports next time.
